TOP “MUST HAVES” FOR SKIERS THIS SEASON

Every year we sift through the sample items sent to us and recommend a few for you to check out. This year we have one, Euro Socks. They are especially designed for skiers, combining 40 years of “Italian expertise.” They are soft, comfortable fitting and re-inforced in all the correct places. Since we have not skied in them we cannot provide an on-mountain report on their performance. Check them out at www.eurosocks.com, or look for them at your local ski store.

We did manage to catch up to ski industry PR veteran, Joan Christensen, who each year provides a “must have” list of her own. Joan reports on some interesting new products below.

Each year, a variety of new products arrive in ski shops that are designed to entice skiers and snowboarders to hit the slopes with the most cutting edge technology— in performance and comfort. This year, it is all about form and function— from boots to bindings to boards—and then looking hot while staying warm in the most efficient jacket fabrics and styles.

Starting with boots that will multi-task by sharpening performance while delivering levels of comfort that were unheard of a decade ago, the boots that get the highest marks are: the Salomon SPK Boot which is 20% lighter than its peers and is designed for the aggressive skier going big in the Park and Half-pipe. The DC Allegiance Boot features the new unique technology of the BOA Focus System, a new ratchet style lacing system being used for boots, running shoes, ice skates etc. It has two zones for tightening the boot so that pressure is evenly distributed on both the lower and upper sections of the boot. The outsole gets high marks for its exceptional lightness.

Bindings are not the sexiest part of an equipment package but are one of the crucial elements for both safety and performance. This year’s choice is the Burton CO2 Binding with its CO2 high-backs that feature a revolutionary design that is anatomically canted to mimic the human form for seamless energy transfer and maximum comfort.

Depending on the terrain preferred and the ability level, there are several excellent options for skiers looking to upgrade their skis. The K2 Pantoon ski is the ultimate powder ski for bona fide powder hounds because of its unique taper from tip to tail. Advanced women skiers will want to try the Salomon Mynx ski, specifically designed for the more aggressive woman who has moved beyond making ski equipment decisions based on color and graphics (e.g. pink and purple flowers).

Once the “below the knees” equipment has been set up, keeping warm, comfortable and stylish become the next on-slope concern. The North Face Men’s Sedition II Stretch Jacket provides the perfect blend of the latest soft shell fabric combined with the best waterproof and breathable membrane available. It is the dependability of Gore-Tex, melded into the soft shell stretch fabric, that moves with every body maneuver even the unintended ones. It delivers that often hard to find marriage of a fabric that is both waterproof and comfortable. With the Burton Audux Motorola Cargo Jacket, skiers and snowboarders can integrate an MP3 player and cell phone right into their jacket and they are wired to go, whether listening to their favorite tunes or making a call back to the office to brag about the latest run. Simple controls are built right into the jacket.

A top list of vital mountain gear is not complete without a helmet and this year’s pick is the Giro Tune Up Wireless model where Bluetooth technology has gone one step further with DJ quality headphones inside the helmet that deliver stereo quality sound for an MP3 player and cell phone without wires stringing out of the helmet.

Additional information, pricing and on-line shopping for all of these items is available at www.geardirect.com.

THANKS, JOAN

Another web site where you can order some of these products and more is run by long-time SKIER NEWS friend Rick Pasturczak. You can find Rick’s on-line catalog at www.AlpineAccessories.com. If you are in northern Illinois, you can find his shop, Alpine Accessories, in Lake of the Hills, at 9219 S. Rt. 31. His catalog is full of nifty gadgets and potential gifts for the skier on your Christmas list.

BAD GUYS -- FOLLOW-UP

In our October-November Issue I told you of the alleged arsonists indicted for the fire set to Vails’ Two Elk Lodge and other buildings atop Vail Mountain in 1998. Their trial was originally set to begin on October 31. Here is a review.

In May 2006 eight counts of arson were delivered by a Denver federal grand jury. A group of three women and one man were indicted in connection with the sabotage against the resort. Chelsea Gerlach, 29, and Stanislas Meyerhoff, 28, were in custody when indicted. Two others, Josephine Overaker, 31, and Rebecca Rubin, 33, were thought to be outside of the U.S. at the time.

According to reports in the Vail Daily, May 19, 2006, the four face five to 20 years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines. Also according to the Vail Daily, William Rodgers, who committed suicide by suffocation in an Arizona jail, was named as a co-conspirator.

The group allegedly planned and perpetrated the attack on Vail to discourage the resort from expanding in Blue Sky Basin, claiming it would ruin lynx habitat. The fires followed a final approval of Vail’s expansion plans after several other enviro groups lost in court to the ski area.

Along with the four, an additional seven suspects were also indicted in Oregon on 65 counts related to arson fires in California, Colorado, Oregon and Washington. They are set to go to trial in Eugene, Ore., on Oct. 31. The now indicted group of 11 became known as “the family.”

According to a Eugene, Ore., newspaper, the trial has been pushed back until March or perhaps later. The lawyers for the defendants said they needed more time to “analyze tens of thousands of pages of evidence” according to the report.

Whenever the trial progresses we will keep you informed, either in hard copy or on www.skiernews.com.

Now think snow!

A Real Town with a Real History

Telluride was born back in 1875 when miners struck a motherlode of zinc, lead, copper, iron, silver and gold. A Victorian town, complete with saloons, gambling, and a roaring red-light district, sprung up overnight. Telluride’s population swelled to 5,000, including Butch Cassidy, who started his bank-robbing career with a heist of the San Miguel National Bank in 1889.

After the mining bust of the 1950s, snow put Telluride back on the map. In 1972 the Telluride Ski Resort opened with five lifts and a day lodge. With many upgrades over the years including the 2002 addition of Prospect Bowl, Telluride has become a world-class ski resort.

Ski-in/Ski-out

From romantic bistros and western steakhouses to pizza joints and Chinese restaurants, there’s an option for every budget. For an evening you’ll never forget, ride the gondola all the way to the top, to Allred’s Restaurant for unmatched views and cuisine (www.allredsrestaurant.com - (970) 728-7474).

STAY at UTAH’S

WOLF CREEK RESORT

EXPERIENCE WOLF MOUNTAIN, POWDER MOUNTAIN and SNOWBASIN

EDEN, UT – In 2007 the readers of SKI Magazine rated Powder Mountain No. 1 for Snow and Value and Snowbasin Resort No. 1 for Lifts. Chances are you have probably never heard of either of these resorts amongst Utah’s more notorious mountains. What they lack in fame is good news for you, because it means uncrowded slopes, nary a lift-line, and fresh powder, days after a big dump. Both resorts are located in northern Utah, the “soft snow” capital of the state, just one hour from Salt Lake International Airport.

POWDER MOUNTAIN

Powder Mountain offers 5,500 aces of in-bounds and backcountry skiing and two unique adventures. Powder Country, a portion of Powder Mountain, is a wideopen series of steep glades and chutes where you pick your own line. Then you ski down to the access road to the resort where a big school bus and friendly driver are waiting to take you back up to more powder stashes. The other unusual experience at Powder is Lightening Ridge. For a nominal fee, a snowcat will pull you along a ridge. You can choose to be dropped off wherever the snow looks most appealing. Upgrading the in-bounds skiing, the resort added the Hidden Lake Express Quad this year, so you will get to that No. 1 rated snow much sooner.

SNOWBASIN

Snowbasin, a Sun Valley Resort, is across high mountain valley from Powder Mountain. The resort was home to the downhill events during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, so you can test your turning skills on the Grizzly Downhill (Men’s) or the Wildflower Downhill (Women’s). You can even turn on the same trail as Bode Miller, when his most amazing recovery earned him a silver medal.

When it is time for a rest, there are three magnificent day lodges and the finest restrooms anywhere. High-speed gondolas whisk you to almost 3,000 acres amidst rocky ridge lines that remind most skiers of Switzerland’s landscape. Once you sample Snowbasin, you will know why SKI Magazine readers rated them No. 1 for Lifts.

WOLF MOUNTAIN

Wolf Mountain is perfect for those just learning or getting back into the sport. The resort offers a very affordable option with excellent learn to ski & ride programs. It also has a cool and edgy, yet safety minded terrain park, and Utah’s largest night skiing operation. Check it out at www.wolfmountaineden.com.

Skiers and riders who want to visit these resorts need look no further for accommodations than Valley Lodging at Wolf Creek Resort. With a full assortment of fully outfitted vacation homes and condominiums within 20 minutes of all three mountains, they can accommodate just about any group size. Their friendly staff can assist with your entire post ski adventures, including snowshoeing, sleigh rides, snowmobiling and more. Check them out at www.valleylodging.com

WOLF CREEK RESORT

Wolf Creek Resort is located in a small town that really is called Eden, just 8 miles up canyon from Ogden, which offers all the urban conveniences with fine dining, shopping and cultural events. The wide-open feel and rural open spaces differentiate this area from Utah’s more crowded and congested resort towns.

The future is very bright for this family friendly, master-planned community. Wolf Creek Resort’s Resident’s Club program includes an existing par 72 Championship golf course, with an 18 hole private member course on the horizon. The Family Recreation Village will offer every possible amenity for all to enjoy, such as the indoor Adventure Lagoon and Pool, climbing walls, tree houses and playing fields. In addition, there will be a lake for sailing and kayaking, tennis courts, basketball courts and an infinity edge pool. They will also offer a Little Trappers Clubhouse for arts and crafts and a seasonally changing interactive science exhibit so the kids can learn how all that stuff out there in the world actually works.

There will also be a Day Care Cabin for the little ones, and a fully trained staff will be on hand to provide endless enjoyment. Trails meander through dense forests of trees so your kids will never know what they will find next, perhaps a teepee, an old tire swing or a fishing pond. Endless opportunities for discovery will be offered.

For quieter enjoyment, the new Members Lodge overlooking the 18th green will offer his and hers locker rooms, a Club Room, indoor pool, fitness facility, a family theater room and a full service day Spa. The Resident’s Club program is so full of fun and value that it’s no wonder so many folks come out for a vacation quickly decide they want to join the Club and become property owners.

Rose-Ski Tahoe, Heavenly Mountain Resort, and Sierra-at-Tahoe, offer resort improvements ranging from an entire town remodeling project at Heavenly and Northstar to new groomed trail patterns at Alpine Meadows and Mount Rose. You will also find new clinics at Squaw Valley USA and snow cat tours at Kirkwood. Terrain park lovers will be impressed with Sierra-at-Tahoe’s features for all ability levels.

Authentic roots prevail in the mountains of Lake Tahoe that were born from the vision of intrepid ski pioneers, Olympic competition and outdoor enthusiasts from the San Francisco Bay Area. That traditional spirit of winter play has been enhanced by top-notch lift systems, the country’s best snowmaking facilities, lavish mountain villages and a local culture unto its own. Winter 2006-07 welcomes visitors from around the globe with new amenities that perhaps will play a hand in turning some of those visitors into the area’s newest locals.

Here is what you will find new at Ski Lake Tahoe’s South Shore resorts:

HEAVENLY MOUNTAIN RESORT

Over the past few seasons, more than $200 million were poured into Heavenly’s mountain and village improvements – a gondola, new resort hotels, new lifts, better snowmaking, improved grooming, extensive lodge renovations, a worldclass ski school facility, and a family adventure center that lets non-skiers join the fun.

SIERRA-AT-TAHOE

Receiving top accolades from TransWorld Snowboarding, Sierra-at-Tahoe’s six terrain parks continue to offer new features at its top-shelf jibbing scene. While the South Lake Tahoe youth action mountain entices beginner park users with the all new Burton Progression Park. Simply put, the Progression Park is for all who have always wanted to try skiing or boarding in a terrain park, but have not quite worked up the nerve and/or shed their inhibitions.

Sierra-at-Tahoe teams up with Burton Snowboards to introduce its Progression Park this season with boxes, jumps and rails all located mere inches from the ground, in a nonintimidating fashion. This will be the perfect training ground for those who have always wanted to test gravity one inch at a time. Sierra-at-Tahoe will also offer lessons on these mini freestyle terrain features so that skiers/riders learn the proper technique when getting started.

KIRKWOOD MOUNTAIN RESORT

If a visitor is looking for mind-bending steeps, groomed runs with exceptional pitch, and the area’s deepest snow Kirkwood is a must-ski. The only resort to offer snowcatonly accessible terrain, winter zealots and powder hounds will appreciate the resort’s ability to serve up a bounty of fresh snow on off-the-beaten-path terrain. Part of the Expedition: Kirkwood series of backcountry tours, clinics, and educational camps, Kirkwood’s Powder Cat Tours are available twice daily to skiers and snowboarders of strong intermediate ability and above.

In partnership with Burton Snowboards, Kirkwood has introduced the region’s first Women’s Learn to Ride Center. Specially designed equipment and proven teaching techniques help women start to link turns faster than ever before. Kirkwood’s incredible learning terrain offers perfect fall line and gentle graduated pitch, with the added bonus of not having advanced skiers and riders whizzing by.

The Ski Lake Tahoe Resorts, on the North Shore include Northstar-at-Tahoe, Alpine Meadows Ski Resort, Squaw Valley USA, and Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe. Here is what is new at Ski Lake Tahoe’s North Shore resorts:

NORTHSTAR-AT-TAHOE RESORT

Continuing its destination development that has turned heads for the past two winters, Northstar-at-Tahoe has begun the next phase of its state-of-the-art project. Northstar Resort is investing $10.5 million in the next phase of mountain improvements that resulted in the completion of two new Doppelmayr lifts for the 2006-07 winter season. The lifts include a high-speed six-pack that dramatically improves access to Lookout Mountain and the Backside. The new lift, whose base is situated directly across from the mid-mountain Day Lodge, whisks riders nearly 1,050 vertical feet in just five minutes. The new six-pack accesses 13 total trails and 137 acres of total terrain, including 60 acres of new intermediate terrain. Included in this terrain is a new milelong run to connect guests directly from the top of the sixpack to the Backside.

The second lift is a European-style surface lift replacing the Salmon Tow, which transported guests over to the resort’s popular advanced terrain on Lookout Mountain. The new lift is friendly to both skiers and snowboarders. The lift is easily accessible from the top of the new six-pack lift, providing convenient access to Lookout Mountain.

Phase One of the new Village at Northstar will be completed this winter, breathing a vibrant energy into the new Village. New shops, boutiques, art galleries and restaurants will complement the ice skating rink and nine fire pits located at the heart of the Village. Upon completion, Northstar-at- Tahoe Resort will have invested $30 million into these commercial improvements.

Northstar expanded its already extensive snowmaking system on the terrain located off the Vista Express and the new six-pack lift. Boasting the largest snowmaking system of any resort on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, more than 50 percent of the developed mountain is now covered with snowmaking.

Northstar’s cross-country center was relocated to make room for the new Ritz-Carlton Highlands resort being built at mid-mountain. The expanded 1,400-square-foot crosscountry center will be easily accessible from the top of the Gondola and will offer more convenient and direct access to the resort’s most popular cross-country trails.

SQUAW VALLEY USA

To ensure every guest gets the most out of their visit, Squaw Valley introduced Squaw Valley TV. There will be flat screen plasma TVs placed in areas like the Cable Car lobby and the rental shop. At these Squaw Valley TV terminals, guests can view real time lift updates, info on conditions and upcoming events and activities to ensure that they are dressed for the weather and never miss what is going on at Squaw. On Squaw Valley TV, skiers and snowboarders can also learn tips from pros about anything from making powder turns to waxing their skis or boards.

Squaw Valley is stepping it up for the 2006-07 winter season with an increase in snowmaking. The Papoose beginner area at the bottom of the mountain and the popular Gold Coast intermediate area now has more snowmaking.

Last season Squaw Valley introduced an on-mountain Demo Center located at the top of the Funitel in the Gold Coast Lodge. The popularity of this convenient amenity has prompted additional improvements to the Demo Center including a new women-specific line to cater to the distinct intricacies of the female body. There is also a brand new fleet of skis including the newest models of K2, Atomic, Volkl, Rossignol and Salomon. From the shaped beginner ski for easy turning, to the fat ski for the frequent deep Squaw Valley powder day, to the twin tip park ski for rail sliding and “dropping in” switch, the Demo Center allows skiers to choose the perfect ski to fit their tastes and ability.

ALPINE MEADOWS SKI RESORT

Internationally renowned for its hike-to backcountry terrain, Alpine Meadows adds a little yin to its yang by enhancing and adding signature groomed runs. With the purchase of an additional grooming machine, called a winch cat, guests can experience different areas of Alpine’s wide open bowls and steeps on new, high-speed groomed routes. The new groomed trails (called high-angle groomers) will cater to everyone’s inner Bode Miller.

Alpine Meadows reinvented the definition of “Terrain Park” by offering features for all skiing and riding ability level from the very top of the mountain to the base lodge. Various tabletops, roller jumps, rails and boxes are designated to unique trail locale. In addition, the superpipe will move to a new location, offering a perfectly groomed feature for all jibbers on a daily basis.

MT. ROSE-SKI TAHOE

Mt. Rose expanded its snowmaking system allowing more trails to be skied during the early portion of winter. The new snowmaking services the upper section of the Silver Dollar run, which gives ample access to the popular Slide Bowl. Additional snowmaking equipment was updated near the Ponderosa Trail. Topping off the million-dollar improvement is a new snow grooming machine and two additional mobile snow making machines.

A mere half-hour drive on one of North America’s most scenic routes, the Mount Rose Highway, the resort has expanded its snow sports school by adding 300 pairs of skis and snowboards to its beginner fleet. Also, with a new $99 three-day learn to ski/ride package, Mount Rose invites novices to discover why so many who were just “driving through” have pulled over for good, making this mountain their home.

Surrounding North America’s largest alpine lake, these seven resorts comprise Ski Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe boasts more than 300 days of sunshine a year and last winter Lake Tahoe had some of the most snowfall in the U.S. The seven resorts, all offering great skiing and unparalleled scenic vistas of panoramic mountain and lake views, are located less than an hour from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport and two hours from the Sacramento International Airport.

BRECKENRIDGE TO CONNECT TOWN and MOUNTAIN with “BreckConnect” GONDOLA

New Lift Will Create a Seamless Link from Main Street to the Mountain

BRECKENRIDGE, CO -- This season, the resort is building excitement off the hill as Breckenridge Ski Resort works with the Town of Breckenridge to build a new gondola, the BreckConnect. It will transform the way visitors access the town and mountain and starts the first of two new base villages at Peak 7 and 8.

Breckenridge’s new gondola sets a new standard in the role of mass transit in growth and development. By creating a new central base area with all the skier services, it will change the way skiers and snowboarders access and move around this mountain. The gondola represents a unification of the community as the public and private entities work together to build an environmentally progressive resort transit system that also creates a streamlined link to transport large numbers of visitors between the town and the ski resort’s Peaks 7 and 8.

Environmental vigilance was vital in this project with more than 20,375 gallons of fuel saved each season from a decrease in resortrun buses. In addition, as part of the agreement with the Town of Breckenridge that included $6.7 million contribution from the town to build the gondola, Breckenridge Ski Resort dedicated 64.7 acres of prime development land to the town for conservation and open space.

As the resort steps into a new era of resort villages with the development of Peaks 7 and 8, the need for a first-class mass transit system that seamlessly moves all types of visitors becomes essential. Upon the completion of the Peaks at Breckenridge, there will be 450 residential units and an array of skier services and guest activities that will drive people to stay and visit the new base areas.

The gondola will significantly decrease traffic volumes and increase the number of visitors to the Breckenridge downtown, the largest historic district in Colorado, as people move back and forth between the two places. Bringing together the two pieces that continually put Breckenridge in the top three most popular winter destinations, the gondola enables the town and resort to strike the ideal balance that maintains the character and vibrancy of Breckenridge’s Main Street and Downtown.

The Opening Day Celebration is expected to take place on Jan. 18, 2007.

BRECKENRIDGE GONDOLA FACTS:

• 10-minute ride time from Transit Center to the Peak 8 terminal

• Two mid-stations at Shock Hill and the Peak 7 base area

• 7,592 feet in length

• 396.1 feet vertical rise

• 28 towers

• Capacity close to 3,000 per hour

• 121 cabins

The new gondola will start from the Breckenridge Transportation Center, located in the parking lot right off historic Main Street, and have terminals at both Peak 7 and Peak 8, providing an integral link for skiers, riders and visitors from town to the ski resort base areas. It will allow the ski resort and the town to improve the overall guest experience by reducing the number of people bussed to the mountain.

As mentioned in the facts above, in addition to stops at the base areas, the new gondola will include a mid-station at Shock Hill. The project sets the stage for the planned developments on Peak 7 and Peak 8.
