SKI SHOWS CONTINUE TO BE
A GREAT VALUE FOR CONSUMERS
SKIER NEWS - October-November 2008, Editorial

As the economy is on the mind of most Americans and the results of the presidential election weighing in the balance, now more than ever, skiers continue to look for great bargains. To help you on this quest, there is no better opportunity than a ski show, where you can visit with ski resort reps and equipment manufacturers.

At this fall’s shows, look for the smart resorts to fill their booths with info on great deals to help you plan an economical visit.

The key this year for your winter trip planning is to be flexible with your travel dates. If the snow is abundant, adjust your schedule and head to the slopes. Your options are to smartly plan ahead and have a little luck with the snowfall, or wait to the last minute, check the snow at your favorite resort and hope for a great last minute deal. This is not an easy task, but the info you gain from attending a ski show should certainly help.

Every year since we started SKIER NEWS in 1988, we have exhibited at various consumer ski shows across the U.S. We began with a show in Philadelphia in November 1988 having never attended a ski show. We did not know what to expect. What we found then and what we still find today, is a lively gathering of ski enthusiasts collectively wishing for a great ski season.

We continue to exhibit at ski shows every year, in Boston, Chicago and San Jose, giving out free copies of SKIER NEWS and information about Subaru vehicles. We also answer skiers’ and show-goers’ questions about our favorite ski resorts. The shows have transformed from being solely about information gathering and entertainment, to exciting events where attendees get free lift tickets, huge discounts on equipment and an opportunity to book great travel deals with the resort of their choice.

Show-goers can still gather information on each resort, but also plan to leave with a voucher for a free lift ticket at almost every event. In addition to the potential of discount shopping, there is entertainment at most shows with trampoline shows, skiing or snowboarding movies, some have fashion shows and much more. Plan to attend and plan to spend four or five hours absorbed in pre-ski season mania.

Here is a listing of some of the remaining shows and the web sites for the major show producers in the U.S.

December 4-7 – Los Angeles (CA) Ski and Snowboard Expo, by Ski Dazzle, at The L.A. Convention Center, www.skidazzle.com

There are other shows around the country and you can search on-line to find a show near you. When you attend a show, you will help to get your ski season off to a great start. So make time to dig through your closet, get out the sweatshirt of your favorite ski resort and mark your calendar to be sure to attend a ski show near you.

We will see you in Chicago, San Jose and Boston.

Please continue to travel and enjoy the freedom of skiing and thank our heroes in the U.S. Military and our courageous first-responders for helping to preserve our outstanding way of life.
And as always, think snow.

CANADA'S KOOTNENAY ROCKIES in B.C. GET CONVENIENT with DELTA FLIGHTS

Discover the Powder Highway & the Experience of a Lifetime

KIMBERLEY, BC, CANADA — Deep snow, funky towns and some of the most down home, snow laden, and adventure packed ski resorts on the continent. More resorts, backcountry helicopter, snowcat and touring operations than any other region in the world. That is the Powder Highway in the southeast corner of beautiful British Columbia, Canada.

Start wherever you like, perhaps in one of the northern resorts of this group, in Revelstoke. People have been skiing there for a 100 years.

Perhaps begin in Nelson where the snow buries perfect heritage houses or in Golden where it is poetically said that the mountains scratch crystal blue skies. Perhaps you will begin in colorful Rossland, or at the southeastern end of the province in Fernie, where steep trees, storybook villages and ‘cold smoke’ have stolen the lives of many wandering ski bums.

Your journey may not start in a town at all. The adventure could begin high and hidden in the folds of the Purcell Mountains, or the Selkirks, the Monashees. Perhaps it would begin in the Valhallas at a backcountry lodge where the sun rolls up and down glacially carved peaks. This is where you would inhabit a world that is entirely uninhabited, except for you.

Maybe you would prefer a remote heli-ski lodge or a flyin cat-ski operation. The Kootenay Rockies happens to be the birthplace of both. For good reason of course: there may be no better terrain suited to backcountry powder skiing on the planet.

To be sure, no matter how it begins, once you are here, there is one highway that connects many ski and snow adventures. You will find almost perfect snow, spectacular mountains and friendly people. It all exists on the Powder Highway.

This area has long been included in the travel plans of many globetrotting skiers. Now Delta Air Lines has discovered the tourism treasures of the Kootenay Rockies Region, and those pristine slopes are about to open up. That is good news for U.S. skiers this winter. On December 17, 2008, Delta begins non-stop jet service between their Salt Lake City hub (SLC) and the new Canadian Rockies International Airport (YXC) in Cranbrook, BC, which is in the heart of the Powder Highway.

With convenient connections to many U.S. cities, this new service will make it entirely possible for you to hop in an airplane in the morning, arrive in the Kootenay Rockies just after 1:00pm (Mountain Time, of course) and be at your hillside condo within minutes. In fact, you have eight world class ski resorts to choose from, four of them within 20- 90 minutes of YXC. Fernie Alpine Resort, Kimberley Alpine Resort, Fairmont Hot Springs Resort and Panorama Mountain Village are the closest. A little further along the way you will find Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, Revelstoke Mountain Resort, Whitewater Winter Resort and Red Mountain Resort. Each has its own unique claim to fame, whether it is the best champagne powder, the steepest vertical, the ultimate family escape or the deepest snow. You’ll want to come back year after year to uncover the many secrets of the Powder Highway.

The Kootenay Rockies is British Columbia’s fastest growing tourism region, providing visitors a stunning array of vacation experiences around the calendar. Four national parks, 77 provincial parks, hot springs resorts, artisan shops and friendly communities complement the dozens of backcountry lodges, golf resorts and adventure operators for thrill seekers at all levels. World beat music can be heard in the hearts of Kootenay coffee houses, festivals and pubs. Community theatres host home-grown and top notch touring shows, and the comforts of home are always close by.

For more information about this stunning corner of the world, visit www.KootenayRockies.com for information for all seasons.

Visit www.PowderHighway.com (either directly or from an easily found link on the homepage of www.skiernews.com) and follow the links to explore this winter wonderland. To speak with a Powder Highway rep, you may also call 1-800-661-6603.

CRESTED BUTTE MOUNTAIN RESORT ADDS AMENTIES, TERRAIN and JET SERVICE

Inspire Your Passion with The Real Deal

MT CRESTED BUTTE, CO — Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) has moved forward with plans and improvement projects for the 2008-09 winter season. The resort experienced their snowiest winter on record last season, with a total of 421 inches of snow and an unprecedented 100-inch base on closing day.

“With the launch of our new branding and marketing, new airline service and improvements to the mountain and base area, we were excited to start the work this summer in anticipation of this winter.” said Ken Stone, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

CBMR improvements for the 2008-09 winter season are focused on creating an enhanced guest experience. New this winter are; increased and expanded airline service, upgrades and remodel of the Treasury Center, a new “Kids Base Camp”, on-mountain terrain expansion in Teocalli Bowl, and glading and brush cutting on the mountain. Along with these improvements, the resort’s base area hotels continue to expand guest amenities and services. The Lodge at Mountaineer Square, Elevation Hotel and the Grand Lodge were recently accepted and are now part of the prestigious Preferred Hotel Group.

NEW BRANDING TO “INSPIRE YOUR PASSION”

After months of research and development, Crested Butte has a new brand positioning expressed in the tag line, “Inspire your Passion”. The new brand promise of “Inspiring your passion for adventure” and its implications will be seen resort-wide. Beginning with a new marketing and advertising campaign, the brand will also be reflected in other areas of the resort from signage to employee uniforms, even in the architectural design of future real estate development.

“Establishing a new brand message and promise by defining what makes Crested Butte different from other mountain destinations is only the beginning. Providing higher levels of guest service and standards that match our brand promise is our focus,” said Ethan Mueller, Director of Operations.

EXPANDED JET SERVICE

Travel to Crested Butte will be easier this winter. Beginning in December 2008, Delta Airlines will begin direct jet service to Gunnison/Crested Butte Regional Airport from Atlanta (ATL) and Salt Lake City (SLC). In addition, American Airlines will add direct jet service from Chicago to complement their current Dallas daily jet service, and United will expand service with three jet flights daily from Denver connecting to hundreds of daily flights world wide.

“Crested Butte Mountain Resort is evolving and expanding,” stated Ken Stone, “Our biggest initiative is to provide exceptional customer service, and that begins by doing our part to simplify access to Crested Butte. Our new air partnerships will ensure a larger number of travel options for our destination guests.”

NEW KIDS FACILITIES

The Kids’ World ski school will see a completely new concept “Kids Base Camp” and see the greatest physical transformation. The new Kids Base Camp will be an exciting, themed program that will intrigue and engage kids through exploration and adventure both on and off the mountain. The current building was taken down to the “studs” and completely redesigned. From a new entrance to remodeled kid friendly bathrooms and play areas, the entire space will be completely revamped. Not only will the space be designed with the kids in mind, it will be easier and quicker for the little ones to get into the flow and let Mom and Dad “hit the slopes”.

“After viewing many of the top children’s facilities in the nation we came home and incorporated the best ideas into our kids building and day care program in Crested Butte. We are excited to have a great children’s facility to go along with our exceptional staff,” said Ethan Mueller.

BASE AREA IMPROVEMENTS

The Treasury Center building in the base area was redesigned to improve a number of guest services. The Crested Butte Ski and Snowboard Rental Shop has moved to a slope-side location. The rental shop and a new retail store will include top of the line rental skis and snowboards along with an expanded retail selection.

The former location of the Crested Butte Ski and Snowboard Shop is transformed into a “Pizza Zone”. Fresh, pizza, beverages and snacks will be available in the lower level of the Treasury Center to eat on the run or to sit and enjoy. The Outpost building in the base area was re-designed and will open as a day lodge for guests. Tables and comfortable seating will allow guests to have more inside space for a break or just to warm up.

NEW GUEST AMENITIES

New this winter will be a central ski valet and overnight ski, snowboard and boot valet service. The service is free to all CBMR hotel guests and is available to other guests for a nightly fee. It features ski-in ski-out access. The ski valet service pampers hotel guest from lobby check-in to hotel check-out with a seamless handling of your ski and snowboard equipment.

The season locker storage on the main level of the Treasury Center will add a basket check for overnight storage of boots, bags or any of those extras that you need to “peel off” or store for the day or overnight.

Elevation Hotel & Spa completed a $25-million remodel that includes all 260 luxury rooms. Also completed is an 11,000-square-foot spa and fitness center, slope side sun deck and fire pit and a completely new Atmosphere Restaurant & Bar in the hotel.

Snow Igloos, Crested Butte’s new, fun addition to the mountain experience, will sprout up around the resort to provide for everything from après ski cocktails to adventure play areas for the kids. The solid snow structures will be at Kids Base Camp and mid mountain outside the Ice Bar Restaurant.

MORE MOUNTAIN TERRAIN

On-mountain improvements include expanded terrain off of the Headwall lift into the Teocalli bowl area in what is known as Teo-2 and Teo-2.5. This will add additional expert terrain into the mix. CBMR’s commitment to providing world-class terrain park and pipe facilities continues with the addition of new and expanded features in the DC Terrain Park and the addition of a completely new intermediate terrain park. Trail maintenance is also a top priority, and brush cutting and mowing work on the mountain’s trails including the “Extreme Limits” has occurred.

The upgrades are all part of the Muellers’ mission to continue to enhance CBMR as a family-friendly, guest oriented and aesthetically pleasing resort. “We want to raise the bar again and continue to ensure that we deliver the best overall resort experience for our guests.” said Tim Mueller.

THE PLAN CONTINUES

This year’s improvements and enhancements build upon Crested Butte Resort’s continued investments in base area and on-mountain improvements over the past four years. New snowmaking, grooming and lift system expansion and improvements along with the completion of the Lodge at Mountaineer Square and Mountaineer Conference Center last season is just part of a $200-million resort wide capital improvement plan.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE RESORTS KEEP IMPROVING

New Lifts, Terrain and Interactive Technology Have Resorts Ready for 2008-09

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA/NV — With its major casinos, South Lake Tahoe is considered a gambling town, but lots of snow could make another big winter look like a good bet. In January 2008, Mother Nature delivered record snowfall of 19 feet to South Lake Tahoe, and for 2008-09, The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts above average snowfall. Locals conducted “Pray for Snow Parties” to coincide with such predictions and with a little luck, it will all have happened.

WHAT’S NEW ON THE SLOPES

Heavenly Mountain Resort\

Heavenly was recently named a “World Saver” by Condé Nast Traveler in the category environmental protection and is ranked in OnTheSnow.com’s top ten “no-car needed” resorts.

The developments continue in year two of Heavenly’s tenyear master plan. Following the debut of Olympic Express and the Heavenly Flyer ZipRider last season, Heavenly will unveil three new, gladed trails on the California side that will include “islands” of groomed runs, giving skiers and riders the sensation of tree skiing without venturing off piste. Heavenly also re-graded Skyline Trail, the connecter that enables the return from the California side to the Nevada side. It is flat no more and now provides a steady downhill access to the Nevada terrain from the California side of the mountain.

Heavenly will double its indoor seating at East Peak Lodge, offer 100 percent Certified Organic Starbucks coffee and Fair- Trade espresso, and eliminate all artificial trans fats in its dining establishments. They expanded and remodeled the California Lodge’s rental shop and installed a magic carpet surface lift at the California ski school. They also added six new, low-emission grooming machines to the country’s largest fleet of Prinoth350 snow cats and expanded snowmaking to cover Nevada’s Stagecoach run. On the high-tech side, Heavenly season passes will include “easy scan” RF technology for access to the lifts.

For more info, please log on to www.skiheavenly.com or call 1-800-432-8365.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort

Kirkwood Mountain Resort added two new lifts for the 2008- 09 season to improve access to 700 acres and over 1,350 vertical feet of skiing and snowboarding in its legendary backside terrain. This is the first phase of its recently approved Mountain Master Development Plan.

The Lookout Vista lift replaces the hike to the famed chutes of Thunder Saddle along with access to the snowfields and cliffbands of Sunnyside. The Covered Wagon lift gains entry to the highest point crossed on the historic Mormon Emigrant Trail along with pristine powder stashes on Fawn Ridge.

The resort installed a beginner-friendly Wonder Carpet Lift at its Timber Creek Base Area replacing existing tows and lifts. Kirkwood revamped its three terrain park layouts for progression and flow. The resort invested in snowcat machinery specifically designed for terrain park applications.

For more info, please log on to www.kirkwood.com or dial (209) 258-6000.

Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort

Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort’s website is providing guests with a cutting-edge online experience with an interactive radar application of weather patterns over precise locations at Sierra Resort. It differentiates between summit and base settings. As storms approach the mountain crests, eager skiers and boarders can follow weather activity in real time . iPhone and other smartphone users can access the mobile web site for live feeds of daily conditions, weather, news and events.

Complementing the progress of last season’s green initiatives with free preferred parking for hybrid vehicles, Sierra-at-Tahoe will further reduce green house gas emissions by encouraging no-idling cars; implementing carpooling resources at SierraAtTahoe.com and by purchasing only 100 percent compostable, disposable products for all restaurants. All plates, bowls, cups and flatware will be made from renewable sources such as sugar cane, potato starch and corn resin.

The 360° Smokehouse BBQ at the top of Grandview Express will cater to small, private groups up to 30-40 people this season providing incredible views of Lake Tahoe, and menu items such as pulled pork, tri-tip, brisket and fried green beans. For more info, please visit www.SierraAtTahoe.com or call (530) 659-7453 or 1-877-754-2782.

SUN VALLEY - AMERICA’S ORIGINAL SKI RESORT - GETS BETTER WITH AGE

THE SUN VALLEY CLUB OPENS NEW NORDIC CENTER

SUN VALLEY, ID – There can only be one original ski resort, and since 1936, Sun Valley has held that distinction. Born out of a desire to bring the magic of the European ski resorts to America, Sun Valley quickly became a phenomenon without peer on this continent or any other. From the crisp air atop Bald Mountain to the quaint walking village below, there is no other place quite like Sun Valley, regardless of the season.

New this season is something special for cross-country skiers. The Sun Valley Nordic Center has been relocated to the new 58,000-square-foot Sun Valley Club in the backyard of the world famous Sun Valley Lodge. \

This stunning new facility features a restaurant, bar (indoors and out), men’s and women’s lockers and lounges, equipment storage, repair and rental.

Cross-country skiers now have all the amenities of America’s first year-round destination resort surrounding their Nordic ski experience, including two outdoor heated pools, iceskating, elegant dining, exclusive shopping and village ambiance to complement some of the best cross-country skiing in the Rocky Mountains.

Forty kilometers or about 25 miles of groomed and marked trails begin at the Nordic Center. Gentle terrain at the trailhead progresses to challenging hills. Gliding over glistening meadows at an elevation of 6,000 feet is a unique experience for the Rocky Mountain cross-country skier seeking a wide variety of classical skate skiing and ski touring. Telemark skiers get a lift on nearby Dollar Mountain, Sun Valley’s sunny teaching mountain with four chairlifts. Instruction in telemark skiing can advance to Bald Mountain.

Ski rentals, ski storage, locker rooms, accessories, wax room, sunny decks and restaurant service are available every day.

All of the rental equipment is the very latest and maintained in top condition. All have state-of-the-art boot binding systems.

The friendly Nordic staff will gladly share tips from conditions to optimal ski waxing. Be sure to ask about races and special events. Private lessons may be reserved at any time.

The all-new Sun Valley Club is located an easy walk from the Sun Valley Village, about one mile to the east. As with all shuttles in Sun Valley, free bus service is available.

Last season, two new high-speed detachable quad chair lifts replaced the older Quarter and Dollar lifts on Dollar Mountain. This doubled the lift capacity on Sun Valley’s beginner and children’s ski mountain.

In another upgrade, 60 percent of Dollar Mountain’s ski runs are now under snowmaking. Twelve acres of snowmaking and 27 new York Safyr Tower Guns were added to the existing snowmaking system. The project will greatly enhance the early season snow coverage and ski conditions on Dollar Mountain.

New ski technology is nothing new to this sunny and gentle old mountain. In 1936, one of the world’s first two chair lifts was installed here by Union Pacific Railroad, founders of Sun Valley Resort. From the opening of Sun Valley on Dec. 21, 1936, to the present day, Dollar Mountain has maintained its reputation as one of the finest ski teaching areas in the world.

Lots of Sun Valley sunshine graces this 6,638-foot, treeless mountain. It has seven lifts and a lift capacity of 3,400 skiers per hour plus a state-of-the-art day lodge at the base of the mountain. Dollar Mountain’s base lodge, the new 26,000- square-foot family center, opened in 2004 and completes the ultimate ski experience for all ages – and ideal winter playground for the young and young at heart.

Sun Valley Resort’s owners Mr. and Mrs. Earl Holding began the reconstruction of the resort’s on-mountain lodges in the mid Nineties. All nationally acclaimed as some of the world’s finest mountain facilities, this newest development embraces Sun Valley Resort’s commitment to providing an unparalleled winter family vacation experience.

Historic buildings, quaint bakeries and local watering holes blend with luxury hotels, five-star restaurants, sophisticated shops and some of the finest spas in the world. Telluride’s free gondola creates a ski-in/ski-out town, and the open and friendly locals welcome all to this unique and unmatched mountain destination.

LEGENDARY TERRAIN

Telluride’s terrain has always been revered as the best of Colorado, and more than 300 inches of snow falls on the 2,000+ skiable acres each year. Combine that with 300 days of sunshine annually and a complete lack of lift lines and the result is that epic skiing and snowboarding is born.

Revelation Bowl has long been the envy of those standing atop Gold Hill. Found on the northeastern aspect of mountain terrain that naturally gathers huge amounts of snow, it is directly off the back side of the famous Gold Hill and Chair 14. From four new advanced to expert runs you can choose ridgelines in either direction from the lift.

Steeper pitches and rock features are on the far sides of the powder bowl. The center touts an expanse of rolling, advanced terrain with a groomed path for cruising. Situated above the tree line, the natural, wide-open bowl offers advanced and expert skiing in an incredible scenic setting.

The opening of Revelation Bowl is just part of Telluride’s recent incredible expansion. Black Iron Bowl, Palmyra Peak and Gold Hill Chutes 6-10 opened to rave reviews last season. The resort has recently expanded by nearly 400 acres, offering some of the most stunning skiing and riding on the continent. The resort’s vertical drop is now one of the largest in North America at 4,425 feet, with 3,845 vertical feet served by lifts.

Backcountry fans will enjoy access into the famed Bear Creek Basin from the top of the resort. Colorado’s only heliski operation, Helitrax, will also fly you up to a 250- square-mile expanse of untouched snow, with terrain suitable for intermediates.

THE HOP GARDEN

Enjoy après ski at the Hop Garden, located at the base of Lift 4 in Mountain Village. This European styled ski bar features a beer garden and delicious hot and cold fare - a perfect complement to a day on the slopes. Hot soups, hearty Panini, specialty pastas, sizzling burgers and an exceptional selection of beer and wine are offered.

ALPINE ELEGANCE IS COUPLED WITH HISTORIC CHARM

Telluride effortlessly mingles urban sophistication, historic charm and mountain spirit. The destination offers over 50 restaurants, bars and coffee shops. For après ski try Gorrono Ranch mid-mountain, Allred’s or the turn-of-thecentury Sheridan Bar on Main Street.

The varied restaurants offer a cuisine culture to rival New York or Los Angeles. From romantic bistros and Western steakhouses to pizza joints and sushi bars, a delicious option for every taste abounds. Count on Smugglers, the local brew pub, for good food, reasonable prices and great beer. A meal at Allred’s Restaurant, at the top of the gondola, provides breathtaking views and promises an evening never to forget.

Lodging options range from hotel accommodations to exclusive cabins and vacation homes. For luxury accommodations, arrangements through the new Platinum Properties offers personal concierge, pre-arrival grocery shopping and much more.

One of the truly unique things about Telluride is the ease of getting around. The trademark free gondola takes care of transportation between downtown, Mountain Village and the slopes. No driving is necessary. The Telluride transportation experience is one of the most enjoyable systems in any ski town. You will never have to wait for a bus since the gondola runs continuously until midnight every night from Mountain Village to the town.

Set in a pristine box canyon with awe inspiring views, world-class terrain, an easy going town and hassle-free destination, Telluride is truly unmatched in North America.

SKI UTAH RESORTS READY FOR ANOTHER GREAT YEAR

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — Considering the 700 inches of snow which blanketed Utah’s resorts and a fifth consecutive record-breaking year of skier visits, it would appear that Utah’s 2007-08 winter season was unbeatable. However, Utah’s ski resorts are up to the challenge and are rolling out a number of improvements for the 2008-09 season.

Utah has three major ski towns, Salt Lake, Park City and Ogden. After flying in to Salt Lake, where the downtown area is 10 minutes away on Interstate 80, you can also keep heading east on I-80 to Park City or north from the airport on I-15 to Ogden. These are not your typical ski towns, they all boast attractions other than skiing so you will never be bored.

From downtown Salt Lake, you will find four resorts within 40 minutes; they are Alta, Brighton, Snowbird and Solitude. In Park City, three resorts are within 15 minutes: Deer Valley, Park City and The Canyons Resort.

Ogden is 40 minutes north of Salt Lake. The resorts, Powder Mountain, Snowbasin and Wolf Mountain, are 35 minutes away.

In each case, you can also choose slopeside or near slopeside lodging, it is just a matter of taste and determining the best way to stretch your dollars. Let it snow!

HERE ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE SKI SALT LAKE RESORTS:

Alta Ski Resort (no snowboarders)

Alta Ski Area celebrates 70 years of skiing this upcoming season. On October 19, 1938, the Forest Service issued the initial permit to construct a lift at Alta to the Salt Lake Winter Sports Association. Alta officially opened as a ski area that December and continues to remain one of the country’s favorite resorts.

Brighton Resort

Brighton Resorthas built a new day lodge called the Milly Chalet. The lodge is located at the base of the Milly high-speed quad. The new $1.5-million facility is approximately 3,500 square feet and will provide guests a comfortable place to rest when skiing in the Millicent area.

Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort

The Tram Club at Snowbird has undergone an extensive remodeling project for the first time in 15 years. Owner Bill Carter has updated the previous “Disco” feel to a more modern, après-ski setting. The Tram Club will feature 12 flat screens, 3 projection screens and all major sports packages.

The Aerie Sushi Bar (on the top floor of the Cliff Lodge) has also been renovated and is now open year-round. The Aerie Sushi Bar is no longer a private club, which enables the whole family to enjoy the extensive offerings, including a café menu with kid-friendly items like burgers and fries.

Kids age 12 and under will continue to ski free with all lodging packages booked through Snowbird Central Reservations or Snowbird.com. Snowbird’s Mountain School has added new pre-season pricing to its private lesson offering.

Solitude

Solitude Mountain Resort has announced $7 million in lift upgrades for the 2008-09 winter season, including two new high-speed chairlifts, which are accessed at each base area – Solitude Village and Moonbeam Center.

Apex Express will replace the existing Apex double lift with a high-speed quad and provide access to the heart of the mountain. Another high-speed quad dubbed Moonbeam Express will bring Solitude’s total high-speed lift count to three. The new lift will create a faster ride, eliminating a large amount of stops per ride due to passenger loading on a fixed grip lift.

Moonbeam Express will provide guests who are beginners a much easier loading and unloading experience, hopefully encouraging them to return. Solitude’s goal with terrain and lift improvements, now and into the future, is to create pockets of terrain that are specific to ability levels, which every ability level can appreciate.

Find out more at www.SkiSolitude.com

HERE ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE PARK CITY AREA RESORTS:

The Canyons Resort

Snowriders at The Canyons Resort will enjoy a new lift and gondola during the 2008-09 season. The new Frostwood gondola will transport guests staying in the Frostwood area, which includes the Miners Club, as well as the Dakota Mountain Lodge, which is currently under construction, to the resort base. It will also connect all other development projects in that area to the resort base.

In addition, a brand new fixed grip quad chair will run from the Tombstone base to a location approximately one-half mile below the DreamCatcher lift base. The lift is the first step in the Iron Mountain expansion, and will initially be used to access the Tombstone lift at the end of the day.

Trees will be gladed in places such as Mystic Pines, off the Peak 5 lift, allowing for more tree skiing and riding for guests. The Canyons will also upgrade snowmaking and grooming equipment, guaranteeing a high quality ski experience.

Find out more, please visit www.TheCanyons.com

Deer Valley Resort (no snowboarders)

Deer Valley Resort has invested $8 million in on-mountain improvements for the 2008-09 winter season. Improvements include the replacement of the existing Cushing’s Cabin at the top of Flagstaff Mountain, adjacent to the Northside Express, Quincy Express, Silver Strike Express and Ruby Express chairlifts. The new cabin will seat 40 to 45 guests, feature updated restrooms and house Flagstaff Mountain Ski Patrol.

In addition, Deer Valley has remodeled the Empire Canyon Lodge to allow more seating upstairs and improve the flow through the beverage and service areas. Deer Valley has also made improvements to snow making and maintenance equipment to ensure its signature excellence.

Log on to www.DeerValley.com

Park City Mountain Resort

Park City Mountain Resort will unveil $10.5 million in improvements for the 2008-09 winter season including a new high-speed lift, terrain enhancements and renovation of the Mid-Mountain Lodge.

Park City’s new high-speed quad, the Crescent lift, will replace and realign the existing Ski Team lift. The lift will begin near the base of the Resort and extend to Crescent Ridge (also known as Ski Team Ridge). The new chairlift will significantly increase accessibility out of the base area as well as to the front-side runs, some of the Resort’s best, advanced terrain.

To complement the new lift, the Resort has made terrain enhancements to improve the skiing experience on the mountain, including a new run and expanded snowmaking. Park City Mountain Resort will also assume operations for Mid-Mountain Lodge in the 2008-09 season. The Resort will renovate the Mid-Mountain Lodge to further develop on-mountain dining. As part of its environmental commitment, Park City is offsetting 100 percent of its power consumption from renewable energy sources. This purchase of 13.9 million kWh of renewable energy credits (RECs) will avoid nearly 19 million pounds of CO2 emissions annually, which is equal to powering 1,100 average American homes for a year.

To find out more, please visit, www.ParkCityMountain.com

HERE ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE OGDEN AREA RESORTS:

Powder Mountain

Powder Mountain has added a new Mountain Adventure Center located near the Timberline Lodge, which will house all of Powder Mountain’s adventure programs, including Snowcat Powder Safaris, Mountain Adventure Tours and the Snow Sports School. Last season, Powder Mountain started all-day guided snowcat tours called Snowcat Powder Safari. Due to the popularity of the program, the terrain available via the snowcat has been increased to more than 2,000 acres.

Restaurants in all three lodges have been renovated to improve guest flow and to allow additional menu options. All changes are designed to minimize the time guests spend off the slopes on a powder day.

Powder Mountain is also taking steps to ensure everyone can enjoy and afford the sport of skiing. The price of a night lift ticket is rolled back to 2002 rates. An adult night pass will be $15 and a child (7 – 12) will be $12. Night operations will start one hour earlier than previous years, at 3:00 p.m., so guests can enjoy a few hours of sunlight.

Log on to www.PowderMountain.com

Snowbasin

Snowbasin Resort has replaced the Little Cat lift that services beginner terrain, with a new detachable quad chair lift starting above Earl’s Lodge and ending at the upper parking lot. The new lift will span 1,578 feet in length and will have a vertical rise of 173.5 feet. A 1,000-foot-per-minute speed will yield a carrying capacity of 2,600 people per hour.

The new lift will better accommodate the beginning skier by reducing the intimidation from downhill skier traffic and easing the loading and unloading process due to the detachable lift’s design.

Find out more at www.Snowbasin.com

Wolf Mountain

Wolf Mountain is an integral part of Wolf Creek. Utah’s complete amenity package offers the best guest experience available. Major improvements for the 2008-09 season include expanded beginner learning terrain, a more convenient skier/guest drop off area and continued improvements to its terrain park. The Wolf Mountain Learning Center offers the best value in ski and snowboard education, with the “Get on Board” pass. For only $200, a new skier or snowboarder can take three lessons with equipment rental and receive a free season pass at the end of their lesson series.

CLASSIC TAHOE LUXURY

Entirely redesigned to reflect the essence of classic Tahoe luxury in the magnificent 1920s grand lodge design style, Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe’s “New Grand Lodge” incorporates rough-hewn beams, rich leathers, and massive granite features throughout. Each of the resort’s 422 guestrooms offers sweeping lake or mountain views along with a cozy ambiance and state-of-the-art amenities. The Lakeside Cottages – located right on the shores of the Lake – are by far the most coveted. Strategically located throughout the hotel are photos from the early days of Tahoe. They provide a nostalgic look at the trailblazers who were the first to work and play in the area.

INDULGENT SPA

The resort is also home to one of the region’s largest and most indulgent spas. The 20,000-square-foot Stillwater Spa offers everything from sports massages to acid peels in addition to salon services. Guests hurting from the first runs of the season will appreciate Stillwater Spa’s new winter treatments: “Back” Country Escape treats sore muscles with a warm Lake Tahoe Stone massage and High Sierra aromatherapy, while the Deep Powder Renewal offers an herbal relief wrap with juniper, thyme, and cinnamon followed by a full body sports massage. Sporty types will also appreciate the Hyatt Stay Fit gym and lagoon-style swimming area with a year-round, heated pool and two oversized jet spas.

APRÈS SKI

After hitting the slopes, après ski in Lone Eagle Grille’s Great Room is not to be missed. The bar’s innovative cocktails are even more delicious when paired with vocals and acoustic guitar music performed by long-time Hyatt favorite Luke Stevenson. For a unique treat, enjoy your handcrafted martini beside the blazing fire of Lone Eagle’s outdoor fire pits, right next to the resort’s private beach.

HIGH SIERRA CUISINE AT LONE EAGLE GRILLE

For an exceptional dining experience that truly exemplifies the spirit and flavor of the region, epicureans will love Lone Eagle Grille Chef de Cuisine Mark May’s newly defined High Sierra Cuisine. When he is not discovering new terrain backcountry skiing, Chef May is creating creative wild game and meat dishes evocative of the mountain destination, combined with inspired fresh seafood preparations and the best regionally sourced, seasonal produce. This winter, High Sierra Cuisine means sophisticated yet approachable comfort foods. Sensational seafood, flown in daily, makes headlines along with plump wild Yellowfoot Chanterelles mushrooms, briny northwestern oysters, and richly flavored game meats. Indulge in Butter-Poached Sea Bass, Braised Leeks, Pesto Polenta, and Tomato Caper Salsa or Rack of Colorado Lamb with Ratatouille, Chickpea Fries and Tomato Garlic Lamb Jus.

CAMP HYATT

A fun and educational experience with the experienced staff of Camp Hyatt, little ones are entertained with games, movies, mountain-themed activities, and maybe an occasional trip to the in-house game arcade while parents have a bit of time to enjoy themselves, as well.

COZY CASINO

As if that is not enough, the resort offers top-notch gaming at the Grand Lodge Casino. Very different from the glitz of South Shore’s casinos, Hyatt’s full-gaming casino, temptingly located just off the lobby, is a decidedly classy alternative, echoing the gracious lodge-themed style of the rest of the resort.

About the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort Spa & Casino

EARLY SEASON SKILLS AND DRILLS:

REFINING SKIING SKILLS THROUGH SPECIFIC DRILLS

by Technical Editor, Tony Crespi

Most top skiers booting up in the base lodge at resorts ranging from Sierra-at-Tahoe or Sugar Bowl in California to Okemo Mountain in Vermont know that performance skiing demands a complex mix of physical skills. In fact, even with pre-season conditioning many skiers – including Olympic Freestyle Medalist Nikki Stone and Bromley Mountain Ski School Supervisor Bud Randall - are stiff after the first few mountain outings.

“I’m usually sore,” admits Stone.

“I hate that stiff feeling,” adds Randall.

WHAT CAN HELP? WELCOME TO OUR MOUNTAIN CLINIC.

Early Season Pointer #1: Start On Modest Terrain Start each day on modest terrain.

Do not hit the steepest and meanest trails for the first run.

Start modestly. Crank it up gradually.

“I mix things up,” notes Stone. “I ski long, GS (giant slalom) turns and some slow, swing, turns. I mix things up.”

“Don’t just start on the steepest and meanest run,” suggests Randall. “Start out with longer gentler turns. Do not just jump into that high speed run. Start out easy.”

Vary turn shape. Vary speed. Mix things up.

Early Season Pointer #2: Use a Moderate Pace

Slow, deliberate skiing takes concentration.

Sometimes it is more difficult to ski at a slower speed while maintaining accuracy than when moving fast. Sometimes pros try to make accurate turns on steep terrain at a slow speed. It takes good balance.

Try starting a nice, round, turn, from a stopped position. Be aware how you need to shift your weight forward, down the mountain, - to initiate that first turn. Do not be rough or jagged. Moderate your pace by moving smoothly and deliberately.

“I like varying my pace,” explains Randall, who has coached skiers at resorts ranging from Vail in Colorado to his current base at Bromley Mountain. “Speed control is a good thing. I like starting at a more moderate pace. Then, later, I crank up the volume.”

Refine your speed control. Just as a driver scans the traffic and moderates speed depending on traffic and road conditions, so advanced skiers can learn to maximize speed control.

Refine your speed control and practice varying your pace.

Early Season Pointer #3: Widen Stance

“This is modern skiing,” explains Stone.

“Widen your stance,” suggests Randall.

Start early season by adopting a relaxed and functional stance. A functionally wide stance is new school.

“I often take a student to an easier slope and spend a few turns in a wedge position, and I drive the ski through a turn, gradually powering the turn up,”notes Randall.

Take a pointer from Randall. Adopt a wide stance.

As you relax, gradually practice a series of different skill blends – different kinds of movements and turns – on modest terrain.

Early Season Pointer #4: Restore and Refine Balance

Virtually every accomplished skier knows the importance of good balance. To an emerging intermediate skier, of course, good balance can simply mean staying upright while skiing over ice or through tracked powder. In contrast, to a world-class skier good balance may mean being able to ski the entire mountain while standing solely on one ski.

No matter how sophisticated and modern the skis or boots or bindings, you cannot ski well unless you are balanced. Initially, standing still, after you put your skis on, try rocking forward and back. Feel the front of your boots and the rear of your boots. Slowly reduce the rocking action. Feel yourself become centered.

Think! Do you feel when you are out of balance? What helps restore balance? What parts are missing? Try to focus. Try to feel your movements.

First, practice smooth, round, turns at moderate speed. Second, watch the throttle. Third, try to vary turn shape. Fourth, do not rush those turns. Fifth, practice skiing with your weight slightly forward and then slightly back. As you glide - slowly - from one long, round, turn to the next, rock slowly from a forward to a slightly backward position. Gradually, reduce the rocking action.

Becoming a balanced skier takes time, practice, and you need to feel how your body continually balances and rebalances itself on skis. Early in the season, make a habit of starting the day practicing slow, round, turns. Try to find your balance point.

Remember: good skiers constantly are balancing and rebalancing. Try to feel how and where you are most balanced.

Early Season Pointer #5: Practice Visualizing Turns

Top skiers visualize their turns.

Stop. Picture a top skier. Think of a favorite trail. Remember the cold air. Remember the pitch. Feel the snow, the edges, and the tightness of the boots. Picture your BEST turns.

“I do this all the time,” notes Olympian Stone.

“It’s a great and powerful skill,” echoes Randall.“Top skiers do this regularly. It’s a powerful skill!”

Practice “pre-living” your turns in your mind’s eye.

Visualize each move. Hear the sounds of the snow. Pay attention to details and concentrate.

Visualize yourself skiing smoothly, easily, and happily as well.

Approach early season deliberately
