EXCELLENT SKIING, CALIFORNIA SUNSHINE & NEVADA NIGHTLIFE - CALL IT HEAVENLY

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA – If you have not recently been to South Lake Tahoe, on your next visit you will be plesantly surprised. A vibrant village, up-scale lodging and exquisite restaurants have replaced the old motels and T-shirt shops. Heavenly has turned the once quirky south shore ski town into a double-black-diamond destination. Rising 3,000 feet above famous Lake Tahoe, the resort’s scenic beauty and great on-mountain experience keeps getting better.

Lake Tahoe’s South Shore is not some sleepy resort. There is an “Open 24 Hours” sign drawing visitors to winter’s hottest nightlife. From around-the-clock poker tournaments to all-night dance clubs and the only stateside Cabo Wabo, the choices are endless. The only limit to the fun is your energy level.

Heavenly’s nightlife will be better than ever this winter with the opening of MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa near the Heavenly Village. Formerly Caesars Tahoe, MontBleu has completely renovated 40,000 square feet of gaming space and their 440 rooms and suites. It offers all new bars, restaurants, poker rooms, a nightclub, luxury spa and Tahoe’s only Ultra Lounge. In addition to a sophisticated look, MontBleu continues to bring headline entertainers to South Lake Tahoe including Jason Mraz, Widespread Panic, Ice Cube and Showtime Championship Boxing.

If that does not get your blood pumping, check out these mountain statistics. Heavenly has 300 days of sunshine per year, 40 feet of snowfall. Its 4,800 acres of terrain is the most in any California resort. The terrain encompasses everything from wide-open cruisers on meticulously groomed corduroy to 1,000-foot chutes that can make your instinct cry out in fear, unreal powder stashes hidden in the forests and five separate terrain parks so freeriders of every level can “go big.” Heavenly ranks among Top 20 Ski Resorts in North America according to Ski Magazine, and the locals voted it Lake Tahoe’s Best Place to Downhill Ski.

Heavenly has poured over $250 million into mountain and village improvements. They include a gondola, new resort hotels, new lifts, better snowmaking, improved grooming, extensive lodge renovations, a world-class ski school facility, and a family adventure center that lets nonskiers join the fun. This year Heavenly dedicated another $5 million toward improvements, bringing the total dollars spent to upgrade to more than $45 million since joining Vail Resorts five years ago. Heavenly turned 50 last winter and proved that great ski resorts do get better with age.

This latest infusion of cash improved snow surfaces with high-tech snowmaking and grooming, provided Wi-Fi access in all the base lodges, expanded ski and snowboard school programs and strengthened the Resort’s dedication to environmental stewardship.

The slopes of Heavenly received meticulous attention with five new Prinoth350 groomers and a winch-cat for high-angle grooming. All new groomers and snowmobiles have category three “green” low-emission engines, as does Heavenly’s fleet of South Lake Tahoe shuttle buses. Heavenly’s state-of-the-art snowmaking system, which services 70 percent of the trails, also was improved.

Also new for 2006-07, Heavenly’s ski and ride school further addresses guests’ need for a safe and educational introduction to park riding with a new Beginner Freeride area at the top of the Gondola. Coupled with Heavenly’s existing park system and designed with progressively advancing features, the Beginner Freeride program helps students gain jibbing success with hits and rails mere inches off the ground.

Savvy travelers know that Heavenly is the place to be when you are ready for a great mountain experience. Heavenly lays claim to Tahoe’s biggest and highest mountain playground, panoramic views of Lake Tahoe’s famous sapphire blue waters, ample resort lodging, round-the-clock Vegas-style gaming, bars and dining, and world-class entertainment. And it is all within steps of the Heavenly Gondola, which is the centerpiece of the downtown re-development

.Combine world-class skiing with California sunshine and Nevada nightlife, and you get an experience so epic it could only be called one thing – Heavenly.

LAKE TAHOE HAS ACCESSIBILITY, MONTBLEU NIGHTLIFE & GREAT SNOW

LAKE TAHOE, CA — With more than 350 ski resorts in 38 states, finding a ski area in the United States is easy. While many destinations claim to be unique, travelers to Lake Tahoe have experienced a truly different destination. There are several characteristics that make a winter vacation at Lake Tahoe special, including the quality and quantity of snow, its 24-hour nightlife and headline entertainment and the proximity of the seven Ski Lake Tahoe resorts - Alpine Meadows, Heavenly, Kirkwood, Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Sierra-at-Tahoe, and Squaw Valley USA.

At the centerpiece is spectacular Lake Tahoe, a national treasure with its crystal-clear waters. An easy drive from the Bay Area, Sacramento and Reno is one of the most convenient places to make that weekend winter escape.

QUANTITY AND QUALITY OF SNOW

The quantity and quality of snow at Lake Tahoe rivals any other North American ski destination. For seven of the last eight seasons, Lake Tahoe has been home to North America’s deepest snowpack. The area annually receives an average of 440 inches – more than 36 feet – of snow. In fact, winter weather systems have brought the resorts as much as eight feet of snow in a 48-hour period. The region’s high elevation combined with the area’s low humidity result in high-quality snow that is typically light and dry. The Lake’s elevation is 6,220 feet and the mountains rise above it to 10,000 feet.

LAKE TAHOE

A visit to the Sierra Nevada is not complete without enjoying the pure waters of Lake Tahoe. Paddlewheel boats, with heated decks and indoor seating, ply the Lake on scenic and dinner-dance excursions. Vantage points of the lake are available atop the ski resorts that surround this majestic setting. The views are so spectacular, many visitors forget they are on ski trails as they practice amateur photography.

24-HOUR NIGHTLIFE AND HEADLINE ENTERTAINMENT

At Lake Tahoe, après-ski activities consist of more than ordering pizza delivery and renting a movie. With the 24-hour world-class entertainment offered by the area’s 10 casinos and headline entertainers, comedy clubs and cabaret shows, new restaurants and chefs, visitors find the indoor playgrounds a perfect complement to the outdoor activities.

Nightlife on Tahoe’s south shore will be better than ever this winter with the opening of MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa near the Heavenly Village.

PROXIMITY OF LAKE TAHOE RESORTS

Lake Tahoe is home to North America’s greatest concentration of skiing – offering visitors the opportunity to sample a variety of resorts and amenities during their vacation. Surrounding the lake, the seven Ski Lake Tahoe resorts are within 90 minutes of one another.

Travelers can experience the area’s 17,520 skiable acres, varied terrain and resort-specific events and features, with a quick drive or ride on a shuttle.

For the latest mountain news and conditions, you can visit many Lake Tahoe web sites through easily found links on the homepage of www.skiernews.com.

This will be the perfect training ground for those who have always wanted to test gravity, one inch at a time. Sierra-at-Tahoe will also offer lessons on these mini freestyle terrain features so that skiers/riders learn the proper technique when getting started.

KIRKWOOD MOUNTAIN RESORT

If a visitor is looking for mind-bending steeps, groomed runs with exceptional pitch, and the area’s deepest snow Kirkwood is a must-ski. The only resort to offer snowcat-only accessible terrain, winter zealots and powder hounds will appreciate the resort’s ability to serve up a bounty of fresh snow on off-the-beaten-path terrain. Part of the Expedition: Kirkwood series of backcountry tours, clinics, and educational camps, Kirkwood’s Powder Cat Tours are available twice daily to skiers and snowboarders of strong intermediate ability and above.

In partnership with Burton Snowboards, Kirkwood is pleased to introduce the region’s first Women’s Learn to Ride Center. Specially designed equipment and proven teaching techniques help women start to link turns faster than ever before. Kirkwood’s incredible learning terrain offers perfect fall line and gentle graduated pitch, with the added bonus of not having advanced skiers and riders whizzing by.

MAKE MEMORIES THIS WINTER at TAHOE’S GRANLIBAKKEN

TAHOE CITY, CA – Granlibakken Lodge is in the business of creating memories. This winter skiers and snowboarders visiting Granlibakken can ski at seven world-class ski resorts, because the lodging property just added Mt. Rose to its $99 Ski and Stay Package. You get the same rate as last year, but with one more skiing option. The package includes lodging and hot buffet breakfast and is $99 per person per day midweek (double occupancy) and $116 per person on weekends.

“Granlibakken Lodge has always been a popular resort for families and singles alike,” said Kay Williams, marketing and sales director of Granlibakken Lodge. “Every winter, many of the same guests return to enjoy our Old Tahoe atmosphere. It is safe here. Extended families and single parents can relax while their children make new friends, build snowmen or enjoy a selection of board games in our cozy lodge.”

The Ski and Stay Package includes one adult lift ticket to Alpine Meadows, Sugar Bowl, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Squaw Valley USA, Mt. Rose, Homewood Mountain Resort or Sierra-at-Tahoe; one night’s lodging at Granlibakken; full breakfast buffet; and use of sauna, heated outdoor pool and hot tub. Ski shuttles stop off and pick up right out Granlibakken’s front door. For guests choosing Homewood Mountain Resort, the same package price and amenities apply in addition to free morning and afternoon ski lessons at Homewood, as well as free Homewood equipment rentals. The Ski and Stay Package is not valid during holidays and reservations are required.

Sometimes young skiers do not last all day on the slopes. That is why Granlibakken’s onsite beginner ski hill and rentals, nearby warming hut and snow play area are so popular. After a hot chocolate and cookie, most beginners are back on the slopes, but some choose to take in a saucer ride to enjoy the machine-groomed powder. In fact, Granlibakken’s history dates back to 1922 when guests from nearby Tahoe Tavern came to sleigh and toboggan at Granlibakken. The resort also boasts ties with the Olympics. In 1930 the Lake Tahoe Ski Club built one of the country’s best ski jumps where the resort now stands and hosted the Junior Olympic Ski Jumping trials.

Granlibakken is not limited to downhill skiing and snowboarding. Many families take advantage of the resort’s miles of ungroomed terrain through dense forests to cross-country ski and snowshoe. Rentals are also available onsite.

With Granlibakken Lodge’s variety of lodging options, from standard lodge rooms to studios, suites and townhomes, there is something for everyone. Many units also have fireplaces, private decks and kitchens, perfect for families on the go. There is free wireless access.

For guests flying in for their winter vacation, Granlibakken provides airport shuttle service, by reservation only, from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

Granlibakken also specializes in conferences and meetings for groups of four to 400 with 16 meeting rooms and more than 14,000 square feet. A special Meet and Ski Free Package is available for $169 per person.

This winter Granlibakken opened the doors to its new Cedar House Pub, offering guests a comfortable and cozy setting to unwind from a day on the slopes. The pub will be open for dinner on weekends and holidays throughout the ski season.

Granlibakken Lodge and Conference Center, nestled in a picturesque 74-acre valley, is conveniently located just outside Tahoe City, Calif., on the west shore of Lake Tahoe.

ALPINE MEADOWS – PEOPLE ENJOY ITS SPIRIT

TAHOE CITY, CA — Since its beginning, Alpine Meadows has provided an authentic, unaltered winter resort lacking nothing but pretensions. Even in 1959 when a group of investors drafted the first prospectus for Alpine Meadows, the vision of the pending winter resort was to provide unique terrain to focus on open bowls and tree runs versus cleared trails.

“Alpine Meadows has a rare combination of high glacial valleys and cirques with a wide variety of open slopes and sparsely scattered clumps of fir, hemlock, and pine,” the plan dryly described. Even then, outdoor enthusiasts pondered the special beauty of the mountains that would become Alpine Meadows.

New for winter 2006-07, Alpine Meadows Ski Resort presents the iRide ticket program. iRide Alpine registration is free and entitles members to receive lift ticket savings any day of the ski and snowboard season, including holidays.

Living up to its reputation for offering a great mountain at a great price, Alpine Meadows has been included in Skiing Magazine’s 2007 Resort Guide as one of the country’s best mountains. It also was ranked by Transworld Snowboarding’s 2007 Resort Guide as one of the mountains for top snow quality at a great price.

“Guests really do get the best at Alpine,” said Matt Janney, president and general manager of Alpine Meadows. “Most guests might expect to pay a little more for such a fantastic skiing and riding experience, but Alpine goes out of its way to keep prices reasonable. Alpine’s iRide Program is one more way for everyone to get the best for less,” he added.

Beyond its physical beauty is Alpine’s mysterious “je ne sais quos” character that has escaped any manifested description. It is more felt than articulated. Alpine mesmerizes skiers through gifts of perfect powder, even days after a storm. It defines us through moments of clarity on quiet traverses through snow covered pine trees. It enlightens us with six open bowls, gentle top-to-bottom cruisers, and tree-sprinkled slopes that were first skied 45 years ago. Alpine Meadows allows its visitors to feel an authentic happiness that only the lucky ever achieve.

Alpine Meadows is a home for all that delight in life’s simple pleasures. The mountain has a pure, straightforward take on winter sports. Folks who work and play at Alpine enjoy the privilege of navigating a snow-covered mountain through the sparsely populated months of winter – a time when most simply regress to warmer, milder climates where a city’s tapestry once again envelopes them into a world of complexity.

“I love skiing at Alpine Meadows and conducting my camps there for both the local support of our event as well as the staff at Alpine,” said Heather Paul. “It provides all levels of terrain, so we can keep beginners on easy terrain and we can also offer the experts so many options to challenge themselves. The community of skiers at Alpine is supportive and enthusiastic of our event. We’ve gotten to know them and feel like locals when we’re there.”

Guests will not find a fancy village, nightlife or even snow tubing at Alpine. It is great skiing and great snowboarding. At Alpine all attention is paid to providing simply sublime powder bowls, enchanted pine forests, and infinite ribbons of corduroy. Attention to these important details has paid off. Skiing and Transworld Snowboarding magazines have recognized Alpine as one of the country’s top mountains.

The mountain’s 13 strategically placed lifts ensure unpopulated runs and serene traverses. With both a boundary-to-boundary and an open-boundary policy, guests are free to traipse through all 2,400 acres of the resort and venture outside the resort to find their favorite run. At Alpine, “if you can see it, you can ski it” is the spoken mantra.

Maybe while snowboarding Estelle Bowl with a newfound chair lift friend, you reassess the importance of friendship. Or while negotiating a technical, 55-degree pitch, trivial details of mundane life just do not matter anymore. Either way, it is all about priorities. Mountains, skiing and snowboarding are the top priorities at Alpine. Adventure, camaraderie, and physical challenges are not only fun and inspiring, they are necessary. This season, experience the true meaning of winter recreation. Grab a piece of inner-peace at Alpine Meadows. At Alpine Meadows, the soul of the mountain is in you.

CAL NEVA IS THE “LADY OF THE LAKE”

CRYSTAL BAY, NV — It was the early 1960s and Frank Sinatra was The Man, and the Cal Neva was his castle. On the North Shore of the world’s most beautiful lake he and the Rat Pack, Marilyn, and JFK, even the head wiseguy Sam Giancana - much to the Nevada Gaming Commission’s displeasure - hung out and played. The Cal Neva was at the epicenter of Lake Tahoe’s social scene.

While the North Shore has matured around the legendary property, the Cal Neva is still the place where Tahoe gathers to celebrate a triumphant day on the slopes.

Those who are fortunate enough to be guests of the “Lady of the Lake” are perhaps even more privileged. Every room has a view of the Lake and the rooms are only a walk away from the celebrated Circle Bar. You will also find a gorgeous view while dining as you overlook the Lake.

Add the luxury of Cal Neva’s own Euro Spa and it elevates a winter vacation to high art. The Euro Spa offers monthly spa specials and features a pre- and post-treatment sauna and steam room facilities.

The Cal Neva’s special $99 Ski & Stay offer is one reason why skiers and boarders set up camp at the resort each year. For one price your lodging and the day’s lift ticket is covered. You will not have to stand in the resort’s cash ticket lines. There will be no hesitation when it is time to hit the slopes. When you are ready, just get your ticket from the ski area’s Will Call window, step in your skis and you are on your way. The price is per person, per night, based upon double occupancy. The $99 rate is for Diamond Peak; other resorts are available as well.

The Cal Neva presides over Crystal Bay. It is ringed by 12 of Tahoe’s most famed ski resorts, including Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Diamond Peak and Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe. In addition, the Cal Neva is one of the closest resorts the Reno/Tahoe International Airport, so you will be driving less and skiing faster.

DIAMOND PEAK OFFERS PROGRAMS FOR FAMILIES

INCLINE VILLAGE, NV — Diamond Peak Ski Resort is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. First opening in 1966 as “Ski Incline,” with about half of the amount of terrain that it has today, it was the first resort in the West to have snowmaking. In 1987, the resort developed the upper mountain, doubling its skiable acreage, and Ski Incline was renamed Diamond Peak. Most of the new trails were labeled black diamonds.

Today Diamond Peak is known for its family-friendly atmosphere, great ski schools, uncrowded slopes, convenient parking and awesome views. There is a wide variety of options for families or groups of friends who want to learn to ski or snowboard together. Groups of ten or more can even get a discount. There are also options for parents who want to drop the kids off and ski on their own. The Interchangeable Parent Pass is great for those with little ones who are not ready to ski yet. Costing $46, the same price as a regular ticket, it allows parents to take turns skiing and watching the kids.

Diamond Peak has adopted the philosophy, “we’re not getting older, we’re getting better.” For their 40th anniversary, they have added even more programs for families and beginners. Here are some highlights of what you will find at Diamond Peak this year.

LEARNING TO SNOWBOARD IS EASY AND FUN WITH BURTON’S LEARN TO RIDE PROGRAM.

This year Diamond Peak teams up with Burton Snowboards to become a Learn to Ride Center. Burton’s Learn To Ride program uses special, easy to use equipment and teaching techniques to make learning fun. The right equipment makes all the difference. All of Diamond Peak’s Ski and Snowboard School beginner snowboard packages include these new Burton boards.

LEARN TOGETHER SPECIAL

Diamond Peak’s wide-open slopes are a great place for a group of family or friends to learn together. Your group of two to five people can spend a half or full day with your own private instructor. The rate for a half-day lesson is $300; a full day is $475 for the whole group, up to five people. It is a great value, and you will spend lots of quality time with family or friends.

SPECIAL DEALS AT THE CHILD SKI CENTER

Kids ages 3 through 7 will have a blast at Diamond Peak’s Child Ski Center. The Frequent Private Lesson Program is new this year. For every five private lessons your kids take, they will get one free. Bee Ferrato, founder and director of Diamond Peak’s Child Ski Center, believes, “this continuity throughout the season allows children to build a strong bond with their instructor.” The Child Ski Center and the programs Ferrato has created have been internationally recognized for their contributions to learning and developing a life long love for snow sports.

Diamond Peak’s Child Ski Center also offers a midweek group lesson special. Choose any two out of five consecutive days, Monday through Friday (non-holiday) for $180. The package includes group lessons, indoor supervision and lunch.

LAST TRACKS FOR SKI and WINE ENTHUSIASTS

Diamond Peak offers Last Tracks, a unique ski and wine tasting event in Lake Tahoe. Enjoy wine tasting and appetizers while soaking up the panoramic views of Lake Tahoe from the mid-mountain Snowflake Lodge. Afterwards ski or snowboard down a freshly groomed slope for your last tracks of the day. Tickets are $25, and advanced reservations are required. Last Tracks happens every Saturday, from mid-February through mid-April, please call for details.
