CRESTED BUTTE EVENTS THIS SUMMER -

HOT FUN, COOL TEMPERATURES &

A MILLION ACRE PLAYGROUND

MT. CRESTED BUTTE, CO - Vacationers in Crested Butte wake up every morning to gaze out on Oh Be Joyful, Treasury Mountain and Paradise Divide. What could better describe a summer in Crested Butte? Set in a remote-feeling valley surrounded by wildflower meadows, three wilderness areas, more than a million acres of National Forest and towering 12,000 to 14,000 foot peaks, Crested Butte is the capital of its own summer wonderland. From wilderness solitude to high-stimulation recreation to startlingly sophisticated restaurants and cultural events, Crested Butte's diverse summer slate appeals to everyone except those who have a hard time making decisions.

From many of the area's peaks, the most visible signs of humanity are occasional mining relics and old mule-train paths. You can take in the views while hiking through high alpine meadows or cruising downhill through lush aspen and pine forests on a mountain bike. Spend the day fly-fishing the gold-medal rivers for Rainbow trout, riding horseback to a high mountain lake with Fantasy Ranch, or rafting the whitewater of the Taylor River.

For all its wilderness allure, roughing it is optional in Crested Butte. Here you'll also find championship golf, world-class music, luxurious lodging, exceptional restaurants, unique art galleries and quaint Victorian false fronts in one of Colorado's largest National Historic Districts. This mountain town presides over a nature-made playground even Disney would envy - with endless fun, spectacular beauty and not a crowd in sight.

Wildflower Capital of Colorado

In an almost unbelievable change of costume, Crested Butte's mountains melt from majestic winter white into flashy summer brilliance. The diverse landscape and geology here have created such a proliferation of wildflowers that Colorado's former Governor proclaimed Crested Butte the Wildflower Capital of Colorado.

More than a thousand people arrive each July for the annual Wildflower Festival, a weeklong botanical celebration, to explore the abundant native flora in the mountain meadows, national forests and narrow alleys of historic Crested Butte. The festival offers an extensive schedule of tours, drawing and painting courses, planting and photography workshops and cooking classes. This year's event takes place July 9-15, 2007. Call (970)-349-2571 or visit them at www.crestedbuttewildflowerfestival.com.

A rich cultural calendar

The dynamic board and staff of the Crested Butte Music Festival (CBMF) intend to put Crested Butte on the nation's musical map year round. The CBMF brings world-class classical music, bluegrass, jazz and opera to the stage, along with poetry, dance and theater, throughout the summer beginning July 4, 2007.

The CBMF Summer Music Series also includes instrumental lessons, voice tutoring and lectures with local and visiting masters. The Crested Butte Music Festival's smaller venues allow fans to savor performances by renowned musicians in unusually intimate settings. For a complete Festival Schedule and more information, contact the Music Festival office at (970) 349-0619 or visit the website at www.crestedbuttemusicfestival.com.

The Center for the Arts also hosts cultural events including the 10th Annual Crested Butte Reel Fest, August 8-12, 2007 and free outdoor Alpenglow concerts every Monday evening beginning June 25 and ending on August 6. Local performers and visitors, adults and children, get into the act through the Mountain Theater and Dansummer while both local and visitors' children excel annually during the Creative Arts Institute.

A highlight for visual art fans, Crested Butte's 35th Annual Festival of the Arts has been named one of the top art festivals in the country. The weekend of August 4-5, the town's main street is transformed into a street fair of juried arts and crafts booths, with food, live entertainment and kids' activities adding to the carnival atmosphere.

Mountain Biking

Considered by many to have the best mountain biking in the world, Crested Butte is also a birthplace of the sport. A labyrinth of old mining roads and single-track trails lacing through the mountains encircles the town. The roads can lead novices through alpine forests to lofty vistas and sensational backcountry scenery while more ambitious riders have an endless choice of advanced technical terrain. Visitors can rent full-suspension mountain bikes at numerous mountain bike shops in the mountain village and town. Crested Butte also hosts the oldest mountain bike festival in the country, Fat Tire Bike Week, this year celebrating its 27th year. This celebrated festival, from June 25-30, has guided tours and clinics for all level riders and a chainless downhill race. For more information on Fat Tire Bike Week visit www.ftbw.com.

This year's NORBA, Mountain States Cup (MSC) regional mountain bike racing series, welcomes back the 7th Annual Crested Butte Wildflower Rush Race. The race features the renowned Cross Country course, the legendary Crested Butte downhill and a Super-D. The third race in the MSC's series of seven races will include the Cross-country race on June 23 and the Downhill and Super-D races on June 24. This five race series has become a local's favorite and has gained more popularity and riders each year. Again this year Crested Butte Mountain will be offering the Shimano Youth Series for kids during the same time. The Powerade series has been experiencing more and more families, so it only made sense to make it fun for everyone. The Shimano Youth Series is designed to give children (ages 12 and under) the opportunity to compete like their parents in a positive and fun environment. The races take place on July 12, July 19, July 26, August 2, and August 9. Pizza or pasta, beer and prizes follow each race. From there, sightseers can climb to the 12,162-foot Crested Butte Mountain peak or stop on the way for a picnic and take in panoramic views of the spectacular Elk Mountain Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The Red Lady Express lift will be open from June 20 through August 12 to carry hikers and mountain bikers up to the numerous trails mid-mountain. From rolling single-track to more advanced technical terrain, Crested Butte Mountain offers more than 15 miles of summer trails to entice bikers of all abilities and ages. Dreams really do come true...

The Adaptive Sports Center (ASC) achieved one of their long-time dreams with the construction of the Adaptive Sports Center Ropes and Challenge Course. After two years of fundraising and a quick two weeks of construction, the course was completed at the end of June 2003. The challenge course, located in the trees at the top of the Red Lady Lift on Crested Butte Mountain, will enable clients, no matter what their ability levels, to experience this unique adventure. The course is made up of low and high events that present a physical challenge to groups and individuals. Participants work together to solve the physical challenges presented to them and in so doing experience teamwork concepts in action - while playing! This is a particularly great team-building program to integrate into an executive retreat.

The Challenge Course will be used seasonally in accordance with the ASC Summer Program dates. Program dates typically begin in mid June and end in late September. Hours of operation will be from approximately 9am-4pm. The course is available to everyone, but reservations are required. For more information about the Adaptive Sports Center and all their activities check their website at www.adaptivesports.org or call (970) 349-5075 or (866) 349-2296.

Getting the swing of it

In the open meadows alongside Mt. Crested Butte lies a championship golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones II, rated Best Mountain Golf Course in Colorado by Mountain Golf Magazine. The golf course, open to the public, is one of the best laid-out and designed courses in the State. "Nature gave the course its scenery and Trent Jones, Jr. gave it his flair."

The dramatic, challenging, scenic course sits at 9,003 feet above sea level and poses 84 bunkers and water hazards on 14 holes. To help golfers meet the course's challenges, the Club at Crested Butte offers expert instruction and clinics from a superb staff of PGA pros in addition to an active and professional tennis program for all ages and abilities. For more information (970) 349-6127 or visit them at www.theclubatcrestedbutte.com.
