BRECKENRIDGE TO OPEN HIGHEST SKI LIFT BRECKENRIDGE, CO In the 1850s travelers flooded into Breckenridge with the hopes of earning their riches in gold. Today, travelers experience a vacation rich in activities and events as well as history and progress. North Americas second most popular ski resort features world-class skiing and snowboarding and now the highest ski lift in North America. The 147-year-old Victorian mining town, located 90 miles west of Denver, is famous for its plentiful and precious powder found at Breckenridge Ski Area and this season, will debut North Americas highest chairlift, due to open in January. This past summer, Breckenridge Ski Resort began construction on the much-anticipated Imperial Express SuperChair. Breckenridges newest high-speed quad will reach an elevation of 12,840 feet and transport skiers and riders to the top of Breckenridges renowned Peak 8. As the highest chairlift in North America, accessing 400 acres of Breckenridges most amazing intermediate and expert terrain, this lift is the crowning touch for this resort. This lift is not just for experts. Advanced-intermediate skiers will also be able to take advantage of this newly lift-served terrain in Imperial Bowl, which will provide much sought after, above timberline, groomed terrain. That is not all visitors to Breckenridge Ski Resort will find. This skiers paradise also offers dog sledding, ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, fly fishing, snowmobiling, dinner sleigh rides, museum visits, theatre, luxurious spas and the highest altitude hot air balloon rides in the United States. Events include the crazy week of Ullr Fest (Jan. 6-13, 2006), which pays homage to the Norse God of Snow with activities such as the Ullympics and the legendary Ullr Fest Parade on Main Street. The Budweiser International Snow Sculpting Championships (Jan. 24-29, 2006) is a family favorite. It showcases 12-foot-tall, 20-ton blocks of snow that are whittled down to works of art by teams from around the world. Spring Massive (April 1-23, 2006) lights up Breckenridge with on-mountain competitions. There is live entertainment, family activities and town specials throughout the entire month of April. And if the towns daytime activities are not enough, visitors find plenty to do at night as well. Breckenridge nightlife dishes out martinis and live music, theatre and the one of the oldest bars west of the Mississippi. The Town of Breckenridge shines in the winter, says Kristen Petitt, Breckenridge Resort Chamber spokesperson. The sparkle from the snow is just a reflection of the excitement around town, the excitement surrounding the new lift, Ullr Fest and other events, and the excitement of exploring the backcountry on snowshoes or the anticipation of a great powder day. The magic of Breckenridge, swirling around the 147-year-old Main Street, never disappoints. SKI FREE/STAY FREE PACKAGES Breckenridge lodging options are just as diverse. CRESTED BUTTE'S NEW KIDS' TRAIL MAP IS BIG FUN FOR THE SMALL FRY CRESTED BUTTE, CO To make the slopes even more fun for children this year, Crested Butte Mountain Resort followed the lead of some true experts - its kids. These pint-sized specialists might not yet know long division, but they have conducted exhaustive field studies in the area of on-mountain play. Young skiers and boarders have perennially searched out jumps and whoopdedoos, found shortcuts through the aspen groves and invented new ways to play on the slopes. This year the ski resort is building on some of those discoveries. A revamped Kids World Corral, new tubing hill and special kids trail map headline the changes. We are focused on the experience of young skiers and snowboarders because thats our future, said Charlie Farnan, director of Crested Buttes Mountain Schools. If we get them started in a fun, safe, learning environment, they will be skiers and snowboarders for life. The KidsWorld Corral has been reoriented and renovated, with a Magic Carpet for kids to ride 150 feet up the gentle play slope. The new configuration doubles the length of the Magic Carpet, so young skiers can make fast friends with their new playmate gravity. Youngsters will have their own trail map this year, highlighting kids favorite trails and features on the mountain. The map will be easier for children to read, filled with color and characters. Over time, trail crews will enhance the most popular childrens areas on the mountain. Historically a lot of our trails for kids are places that they found for themselves, Farnan said. With a little attention, we can make them even more kid friendly. Families will gather at the top of the Painter Boy chairlift for many reasons this year, with a new tubing hill next to the KidsTerrain Park and Camp 4 Coffee. Parents can take a break and sip their lattes in the sun while the kids laugh their way down the junior-sized tubing hill or ski and snowboard on introductory jumps, rails, tabletops and a quarterpipe. The Kids Terrain Park is already a big seller; it has everything youd find in a regular terrain park, but it is kid sized, said Ellen Osterling, manager of KidsWorld. That whole area at the top of Painter Boy will be a great draw for families. Kids Night Out programs will be even livelier this year, with torchlight parades, tubing down the slopes and marshmallow roasting over a portable fire pit, Osterling said. The traditional Kids Night Out pizza parties will alternate with cookouts around a new barbecue grill. As always, young skiers and boarders might get to shake paws with Bubba and Betty on the slopes. These loveable, larger-than-life bears, who ski, telemark and snowboard with remarkable agility, got a prime-time makeover last year. They still love to frolic with their young fans. Bubba and Betty might slip away for a hot chocolate around the fire when the lifts close, but kids can keep on playing, with a lighted tubing hill at the base area that stays open into the evening. The most important thing that will NOT change this year is the heart of Crested Buttes KidsWorld. The reason Kids World is so successful is that our instructors have a lot of kid in them, Farnan said. They havent lost that kid spirit and sense of humor like so many adults. The kids want to be with our instructors; they want to come back. Osterling added, Our strength is still in our personal feel, the one-on-one interactions and the bonds people form over the years. When kids come back year after year and get to know the same instructors, they feel so much more comfortable. And parents can call me personally if they want to talk. People tell us it feels so much warmer and more personal than the crowded mega-resorts. KidsWorld offers programs for young people ages 3- 16, with a nursery for infants as young as 6 months. Programs encompass beginners to rippers, with tag-along lessons and evening activities as well. Of course, the larger setting of Crested Butte also suits families, with shops, restaurants, ski terrain and recreation options for all ages and tastes, in a safe, convenient, pedestrianfriendly community. Crested Butte is just about perfect for families, Osterling said. Some families have come back every winter for so many years that weve become part of their kids lives. One of the little girls I taught to ski eventually became an instructor here. I love seeing lifetime friendships develop with our kids. STAY AT MANOR VAIL and YOU ARE GOLDEN Special to SKIER NEWS by JAMIE GRIBBON Vail is one of the premier winter destinations in the U.S. and arguably among the best of the world. Originally the training site of the U.S. Armys 10th Mountain Division, Vail exploded onto the national and international vacation scene over 40 years ago as the place to be seen. Never one to rest on its fame, the town is undergoing a billion dollar renewal effort with new parking, lodging and on-hill improvements in the works. One of the original Vail lodges is the Manor Vail Resort and Conference Center, which offers hotel rooms and fully furnished condos, plus 8,700 square feet of meeting space for those who combine business with pleasure. Manor Vail, which is about to undergo its own multi-million dollar renewal in 2006, is located at the base of Golden Peak, close to the Golden Peak Lodge. Skiers can suit up in their rooms and walk to the adjacent Riva Bahn lift in minutes. This lift provides access to all the upper mountain terrain yet is less crowded. A complimentary town shuttle can take visitors anywhere in Vail, so there is no need to rent a car. Manor Vail features studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom condominiums as well as hotel rooms. All condos are individually owned and decorated and have a fully equipped kitchen, living room with fireplace and private balcony or patio. Oversized hotel rooms feature private bath and one king or two double beds. Manor Vail is a Premier Resorts property and therefore offers the best of everything for business or pleasure travel. Skiers can leave the slopes and in minutes enter the resorts full service spa, Spa Struck, where an assortment of body treatments will melt tired muscles and soothe body, mind and soul. Spa Struck also offers a host of beauty and skin treatments any day of the week. The spa operates year round; the same goes for the heated pools, hot tubs, steam room, sauna, gym and cardiovascular equipment. Depending on the time of year, visitors can hit the ski resort or golf, play tennis or make the most of a business conference or wedding in total luxury. Since man (or woman) cannot live by snow alone, there is also great first-class dining. The Lord Gore Restaurant with its decadent cuisine and gorgeous views is considered one of the most romantic restaurants in Vail. Before dinner, enjoy a drink in Fitzwilliams Piano Lounge, a favorite après ski spot for locals. Lord Gore was an English nobleman who traveled through what was then wilderness with his companion, Lord Fitzwilliam. The pair explored the American West in style; enjoying meals complete with silver service and fine china despite being in the middle of beautiful nowhere. Premier Resorts took this outlook on life to heart and updated it to meet the standards of 21st century Vail. Sure, the restaurant, lounge and spa are nice, but when it comes right down to it, Manor Vail in winter is all about the skiing. With 5,289 acres, Vail is the largest single mountain ski resort in North America, featuring seven Back Bowls, backcountry skiing in Blue Sky Basin and an incredible variety on the front side including four terrain parks. Vail has 193 trails accessed from 34 lifts; so you can find just about anything. Start your day by warming up on groomed runs. With the worlds most modern snowcat fleet, Vail manicures 1,300 to 1,600 acres every night. For adventure, head to those Back Bowls where you will discover more than 3,000 acres of wide-open terrain that stretches across six miles. Choose your own adventure and make the trip to Manor Vail your perfect vacation. For more info on Manor Vail Resort, log onto www.manorvail.com or call 1-800-950-VAIL (8245). Please mention SKIER NEWS for additional discounts. For information on other Premier Resorts throughout the American west, Hawaii, Baja California, and South Carolina, log onto www.premier-resorts.com, or call 1-800-542- 4253. ###

All of the properties are close to the charming Victorian town and the Breckenridge Ski Resort. When you start to plan your trip, ask yourself these questions: What dates will we arrive and depart the resort? Consider some of the special travel dates during the year. The Ski-Free/Stay-Free program offers a free night of lodging and can include a free day of skiing for each adult in the party (requires at least a 4-night stay and purchase of a multi-day lift ticket). This long-standing program is in effect before and after Christmas week. The fifth annual Breckenridge Spring Massive Festival occurs April 1 - April 23, 2006. You can enjoy concerts, competitions, celebrity racing, nightlife, exhibitions, jams, film shoots, kids activities, and the legendary spring conditions for which Breckenridge is famous. Other traditional events like the Lighting of Breckenridge on Dec. 5, International Snow Sculpture Championships held Jan. 24-29, 2006, and the Ullr Fest winter carnival from Jan. 6- 13, 2006 might influence your travel dates. Peak Property offers special lodging rates during each of these events. Next, ask how many people are in the group and what kind of accommodations will we need (are there couples or single people)? Are there any locations or amenities that we wanted (does it have to be close to the slope or more secluded)? Your lodging is usually the most important part of your travel package, so chose a property that meets everyones expectations. If you had always dreamed of a cabin in the woods, let the agent know. Maybe being close to town and the slopes is more important to your group. Finally, determine how you are going to get to Breckenridge, by flying or driving? Peak Property offers discounted airfare that can be better than advertised specials or Internet fares. Will you need to rent a car? If so, what kind of car would suit your needs? Also, compare rental car rates against airport shuttle fares. Based on the location of your lodging, you may not need to rent a car and can leave the driving (and gas prices) to someone else. Many times, the comparison can save you money. Complete your travel package with the following: snowmobile tours, sleigh rides, dog sledding, fly-fishing, horseback riding, hot air balloon flights, scenic tours and more. The choices are yours. Contact the friendly staff at Peak Property Management and they will customize your vacation package to Breckenridge, Colo. SNOWBASIN FEATURES FABULOUS FOOD and FLYING KANGAROOS HUNTSVILLE, UT True to its world-class standing, Snowbasin, a Sun Valley Resort, continues to innovate and fascinate. It is known as the home of the breathtaking and technically intimidating mens and womens downhill and super G competitions for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. This luxurious year-round resort is also home to abundant beginner and intermediate terrain, cross-country and snowshoe trails, and some of the best food at a ski resort. Located in the idyllic northern Utah community of Huntsville, in the spectacular Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Snowbasin has established itself as the newest destination that savvy fans want to keep to themselves. But, as outstanding resorts tend to do, this one has stepped into the limelight and there is no turning back. Still, you will rarely find a long line to board a lift or a tram at Snowbasin. By design, the resort moves skiers up the mountain quickly and efficiently. It makes it easy to descend the long, cruising, intermediate trails or the high alpine bowls, powder glades and expert downhill courses many times in one day. Some Snowbasin skiers say they ski extra hard just so they can indulge in a little more homemade pasta or boar sausages and polenta by the fireplace at Earls Lodge, a Snowbasin restaurant. Here is what is new and what is still fabulous 2005-06: White Truffles and Homemade Tagliatelle Snowbasin Resort now boasts a well-traveled Italian chef at the helm of its many food venues. With the Winter Olympic Games in Torino just around the corner, executive chef Elio Scanu, who was born in Asti, in the Torino region of Italy, is dreaming of the famous White Truffle of Alba. Scanu plans to procure some of the highly sought-after fungus (it has been known to fetch $2,300 a pound) for a special Olympic tribute dinner in which he will prepare an extraordinary meal using the white truffle, pairing it with a fine Barolo wine from the region. As the Olympics unfold in Torino, some fortunate diners at Snowbasin will be snug in gourmet heaven. At Snowbasins beautifully appointed restaurants and lounges, Scanu revisits classic dishes and puts a modern mountain spin on them. For instance, at the elegant Earls Lounge, a posh bar and dining room at the resorts base, the standard caprese salad is reinterpreted as Liquid Capresea roasted whole tomato filled with a tangy mozzarella and Swiss cheese fondue accompanied by focaccia chips, extra virgin olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar. Wine braised homemade sausages of pork, boar and elk are served over creamy polenta and Portobello mushroom chips and the black corn tamales are stuffed with lobster and topped with a chipotle pepper cream sauce. Each of Snowbasins lodges, Earls Lodge, the John Paul Lodge and the Needles Lodge feature some of the most fresh, innovative food found at any ski resort. Home of The Flying Kangaroos Snowbasin is the North American Home to the Australian Womens Aerial Ski Team, also known as The Flying Kangaroos. These awesome women come to Snowbasin from the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia, located in Melbourne. The team of consists of the 2006 and 2010 Squads. Members include 2002 Gold Medallist Alisa Camplin, three-time World Champion Jacqui Cooper, and current World Champion Lydia Lerodiaconou. This winter, the Kangaroos will be honing their technical skiing skills on the resorts challenging terrain. When the team is at Snowbasin, they will be easy to recognize wearing their Australian ski team uniform. Guests are invited to say hello as well as watch the women perfect their skiing skills. Downhill on a Tube Tubing - flying down a chute on an inflated rubber tube - is one activity of choice for both young and old at Snowbasin. New this year, the resort has installed six tubing lanes of varying levels. It is a great place to go for an exhilarating ride. First-Timer? There is always a first time and Snowbasin welcomes first-time skiers with friendly group instruction courses. Classes include a Little Cat lift pass and are $52 for adults and children. Ski Snowbasin Package Snowbasins ski package includes luxury accommodations in one of the Grand America Hotels Premier guestrooms in Salt Lake City, as well as a ski pass. The hotel is just 55 minutes from the slopes. SOLITUDE GETS MORE MOUNTAIN UPGRADES SOLITUDE, UT Solitude winter visitors may not recognize the Moonbeam base area this season. New are two major improvements, both specifically aimed at enhancing the Moonbeam area and enriching the day guests experience. A new lift and lodge adjacent the existing Moonbeam Center are ready. The new Moonbeam quad chair will replace the current Moonbeam II lift. In addition to a more efficient ride, the new lift will bring skiers and riders slightly further uphill, making the mid-mountain intersection less congested and providing an easier unloading experience for beginner and intermediates. Also, the lift will disperse visitors more quickly and efficiently during high traffic times from the Moonbeam parking lot. The other improvement, a new day lodge, will provide Solitudes day guests with a much-needed facility for additional on-mountain dining and relaxation. The village, completed last year, provided the mountains overnight visitors with several amenities, however, none were specifically aimed at enhancing the day visitors experience, nor easily accessible from the Moonbeam parking area. This has now changed. Construction continued rapidly this past summer. The lodge is designed to not only be functional and complement the mountain, but to blend with the architecture of the European-styled Solitude village. This 12,000-square-foot day lodge is adjacent to the Moonbeam Center and is home to a new rental and custom repair shop, private and public lockers, indoor/outdoor food service, an après ski bar, a rooftop sun deck and a spacious and inviting sitting den, which will make up roughly one-third of the new facility. Our building is on par with the best new lodges it is very elegant, yet comfortable and definitely fitting of the canyon surroundings, said Solitudes Vice President Dave DeSeelhorst. To view an artists rendering of this wonderful mountain lodge visit www.skisolitude.com. Last summer, Solitude improved its snowmaking system, tripling its snowmaking capacity by updating the system pumps and adding several new snow guns. Solitude continues to search out new means to improve every individuals on-mountain experience. Solitude Mountain Resort is a year-round, familyfriendly destination that receives more than 500 inches of the Greatest Snow on Earth every year. It is located just 40 minutes from the Salt Lake City International Airport. For more information, please log on to Solitudes web site via an easily found link on the home page of www.skiernews.com.
