THE CANYONS RESORT - UTAHS ULTIMATE WINTER PLAYLAND PARK CITY, UT American Skiing Company, the parent company of the Canyons Resort, spent more than $10 million for improvements on the mountain for the 2006- 07 season. The enhancements included a new quad chair, new terrain, a new hotel and expansion of a mid-mountain lodge. EXPANSIVE TERRAIN The Canyons has always had the most terrain in Utah, and this year has added 200 acres of new tree skiing off of a new quad chair. The new DreamCatcher lift services an area of the resort that caters to upper intermediate to advanced skiers with gladed runs and challenging terrain. With over 3700 acres on the trail map, The Canyons not only offers a day of skiing and boarding for the expert but has more than its share of intermediate to beginner runs as well. With eight peaks within its boundaries, there is a ride for every level of skier, and powder stashes can always be found. The resort revamped a congestion point on the mountain over the summer by upgrading the Tombstone Express, formerly a quad chair, to a high-speed six-pack. The lift is a major artery at The Canyons, helping move guests around the mountain. Additional seating on the chair greatly increased the uphill capacity, giving guests many more chances to slide down the hill. ENHANCEMENTS TO RED PINE LODGE The Red Pine Lodge at mid-mountain is a family friendly point to meet midday for lunch and some reflection. This year the lodge has a brand new look, with an updated menu and an expanded eating area, seating up to 200 more guests at a time. The Red Pine Draft House, on the second floor of the lodge, is an added bonus. THE SILVERADO LODGE At the village level of the resort, the Silverado Lodge is a new upscale condo-hotel that will join the Grand Summit Hotel and The Sundial Lodge as properties managed by The Canyons Resort. The Silverado Lodge will add 265 luxury rooms to the expanding village area and is scheduled to open in January 2007. That is just in time for The Sundance Film Festival and school vacation weeks in February and March, all of which are very popular times to visit the resort. NICKELODEAN JOINS IN THE FUN For family fun The Canyons is tough to beat. In response to the very popular Nickelodeon Sneak Peak event last season, The Canyons will be hosting two Nickelodeon Family Winter Fests on Jan. 1-6 and March 19-23. These will include a full line-up of family events and music including appearances from Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob SquarePants and performances by The Dirty Sock Funtime Band. Nickelodeon has teamed up with the resorts of the American Skiing Company and Rossignol to make skiing and snowboarding extra exciting for kids with exclusive Dora the Explorer Skis, SpongeBob Skis and SpongeBob snowboards. Designed to make skiing and snowboarding more engaging for kids who are just starting out, they are only available for rent or for sale at Canyon Mountain Sports located in The Canyons Resort Village. Additionally, there will be other Nickelodeon branded merchandise available for sale in a special Nickelodeon themed section of Canyon Mountain Sports. MONEY-SAVING DEALS Great deals are available for the 2006-07 season with lodging specials like SKI & STAY or SKI FREE. SKI & STAY offers lodging discounts of 10 percent off at The Canyons and other Park City lodging properties all season long, and you will receive a free day of skiing with the purchase of each multi-day lift ticket. The SKI FREE package is the best deal when you stay slopeside at the Grand Summit Hotel, Sundial Lodge or Silverado Lodge. In addition to lodging, guests also receive two free lift tickets per night and free breakfast at The Cabin restaurant for two each night of their stay. There are some restrictions with packages, and they are based on availability. Call 1-888-CANYONS (1-888-226-9667) for reservations or information. With non-stop flights from 70 U.S. cities into Salt Lake City International Airport, getting there is easy. Once on the ground, you are 32 freeway miles from the resort, which means you will spend less time in your rental car or shuttle van and more time skiing. STEAMBOAT GETS $7 MILLION for ON MOUNTAIN IMPROVEMENTS STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO Improvements valued at more than $7 million were made to the Steamboat Ski Area for the 2006-07 season. These on-mountain improvement projects enhanced a variety of facilities, services and programs across the resort and improved the overall resort experience. Lift, trail and snowmaking enhancements to the popular Sunshine Bowl area were the essential focus of the investment. Steamboat Ski Area and the larger community are poised for a great season in 2006-07 when you match these capital improvement plans with the resorts industry leading guest service, family and on-mountain programs, stated Chris Diamond, president of the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation. The Sunshine project included a new trail, expanded snowmaking coverage, and the replacement of the Sunshine triple chairlift with a high-speed detachable quad chairlift. Other significant trail projects were made to the Rendezvous Saddle area. Nearly $1.5 million have been spent renovating popular cafeterias and grooming equipment, including a new winch cat and specialty Superpipe equipment. Improving air access to the resort, an $18-million, 22,000-square-foot addition to the Yampa Valley Regional Airport terminal was funded by federal and county funds. The 2006-07 on-mountain improvements, coupled with what is a vastly improved guest experience at the Steamboat/Hayden Airport, will mean a significantly enhanced vacation experience for the majority of our guests, said Andy Wirth, vice president of sales and marketing. SUNSHINE EXPRESS HIGH-SPEED QUAD POWERED BY SOLAR/WIND ENERGY Steamboat installed a Leitner- Poma of America high-speed quad chairlift, replacing the Sunshine fixed grip triple. The Sunshine Express significantly enhances the guest experience by reducing travel time from 11 minutes to 5.5 minutes. The new lift has a vertical rise of 1,400 feet, a slope length of 5,500 feet, and a top speed of 1,000 feet per minute. As a part of its long-standing commitment to the environment, Steamboat purchases renewable energy certificates to offset the electricity needed for the Sunshine Express lift. The purchases are renewable energy certificates from 3 Phases Energy Services to ensure the delivery of clean, natural power to the grid thereby displacing an equivalent amount of energy that otherwise would have been created by non-renewable sources. Under the energy certificates, the Sunshine Express operates on a combination of wind and solar power. It is the first lift in the country to use solar power. SUNSHINE BOWL TRAIL AND SNOWMAKING ENHANCEMENTS There are several trail improvements for this season. A new trail bypasses the steep upper section of Tomahawk and traverses back to the High Noon and Rendezvous Saddle area. Also, the resort regraded the popular beginner trail Broadway, improving its width and decreasing its steepness. Snowmaking has been extended to cover the new trail plus upper sections of the Tomahawk and High Noon trails. New trail signage and family terrain features were upgraded. The Sunshine area has always been a fantastic family-friendly, intermediate cruising area, which anchors our position as the number one family resort in the West, said Doug Allen, vice presidentmountain operations for the resort. Now with the addition of a highspeed quad, new trail and kidfriendly features, we plan to set the bar even higher and will debut a redesigned contemporary area of the mountain perfect for families. THUNDERHEAD AND RENDEZVOUS FOOD COURT The resort invested nearly $1 million in the renovation of food outlets at the Thunderhead and Rendezvous lodges. Both facilities received a complete facelift, redesign and improved flow dynamics under the direction of design firm Three Dimensional Services (3DS). Originally constructed in 1970 as a mid-mountain chalet, Thunderhead was transformed into a multi-dimensional food and gathering destination. BK Corral, located on the third floor of Thunderhead, has been converted into a state-of-the-art, historically themed food and beverage destination. The new facility offers a variety of selection portals, improved quality, efficient service and a warm-hearted, unpretentious décor that opens view corridors and sight lines. With the change, the facility added 52 seats, increasing the average number of daily guests by five percent. Rendezvous Saddle Lodge underwent a similar transformation that took the facility to a new level while maintaining the heavy timber, post-and-beam structure, vaulted ceilings and expansive views. The new facility offers a variety of selections, improved quality, efficient service, and new exit portal. In addition, the southwestern station was moved to the second level, allowing the pizza station located in The Loft to expand. ZAUGG PIPE CUTTER As part of its 2006 capital program, the company purchased a state-of-the-art Zaugg superpipe cutter. The Zaugg creates an elliptical shape, which makes for a smoother landing in the pipe and allows an individual to gain speed easier, resulting in more hits during the run. This season one pipe grooming machine and two normal grooming snowcats are dedicated to the 11.8-acre SoBe Terrain Park and Mavericks Superpipe. SNOWMAKING The snowmaking system of Steamboat saw new hose, fan guns, upgrades to one of the systems pump houses and the addition of 2,500 feet of 10-inch pipe to the primary pipeline on Vogue and Tomahawk. The new snowmaking pipe is lined with concrete and rated to last an average of 50 years, twice as long as existing pipe and able to handle pressure upwards of 700 pounds per square inch. Already in use in Europe, this technology is just coming to the U.S. These improvements continued to enhance water management, increase capacity and address safety issues. The system covers 438 acres of top-to-bottom terrain or 35 trails accessed by 13 lifts including the eight-passenger gondola. PEAK PROPERTY IS YOUR FRIEND IN BRECKENRIDGE BRECKENRIDGE, CO If you had the opportunity, would you call a friend that knew all about your next vacation destination? Suppose that friend had lived in the area for years and knew the nicest places to stay, the best restaurants to sample, and the fun activities to try. There is one company in Breckenridge, Colo. that has that kind of knowledge, Peak Property Management. Your friends, in this case, are people who live and play in Breckenridge. They know the best places and have all the answers. Peak Property Management has been in Breckenridge since 1986 helping homeowners and guests from all over the world. They offer complete travel packages, custom packages and vacation specials to this beautiful and historic town. Your packages can include lodging, lift tickets, airfare, and ground transportation. Peak Property has locations throughout Breckenridge. Choose from ski-in/ski-out, shuttle serviced or secluded sites. These properties range in size from studios to 7- bedroom homes. All of the properties are close to the charming Victorian town and the Breckenridge Ski Resort. When you start to plan your trip, ask yourself these questions: What dates will we arrive and depart the resort? Consider some of the special travel dates during the year. The Ski-Free/Stay-Free program offers a free night of lodging and can include a free day of skiing for each adult in the party (requires at least a four-night stay and purchase of a multi-day lift ticket). This long-standing program is in effect before and after Christmas week. The sixth annual Breckenridge Spring Massive Festival occurs April 1 - April 22, 2007. You can enjoy concerts, competitions, celebrity racing, nightlife, exhibitions, jams, film shoots, kids activities, and the legendary spring conditions for which Breckenridge is famous. Other traditional events like the Lighting of Breckenridge on Dec. 2, International Snow Sculpture Championships held in January, and the Ullr Fest winter carnival also in January, might influence your travel dates. Peak Property offers special lodging rates during each of these events. Next, ask how many people are in the group and what kind of accommodations will we need (are there couples or single people)? Are there any locations or amenities that we wanted (does it have to be close to the slope or more secluded)? Your lodging is usually the most important part of your travel package, so chose a property that meets everyones expectations. If you had always dreamed of a cabin in the woods, let the agent know. Maybe being close to town and the slopes is more important to your group. Finally, determine how you are going to get to Breckenridge, by flying or driving? Peak Property offers discounted airfare that can be better than advertised specials or Internet fares. Will you need to rent a car? If so, what kind of car would suit your needs? Also, compare rental car rates against airport shuttle fares. Based on the location of your lodging, you may not need to rent a car and can leave the driving (and gas prices) to someone else. Many times, the comparison can save you money. Complete your travel package with the following: snowmobile tours, sleigh rides, dog sledding, fly-fishing, horseback riding, hot air balloon flights, scenic tours and more. The choices are yours. Contact the friendly staff at Peak Property Management and they will customize your vacation package to Breckenridge, Colo. CRESTED BUTTE IMPROVES for 2007 NEW HIGH SPEED QUAD TOPS THE LIST MT. CRESTED BUTTE, COCrested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) is a family-operated business whose owners are serious about skiing, the environment and the community. With this in mind, they have made many improvements for the 2006-07 season, including: a new high-speed quad chairlift, upgraded snowmaking, a new winch cat, increased safety patrols, mascot rehab, real estate acquisitions, upgraded software systems, project completions and new project plans. The most visible change this winter will be the replacement of the East River Lift with a high-speed quad. East River has great intermediate skiing. The addition of this high-speed quad will enhance the guest experience as we continue to improve our existing product, said Randy Barrett, CBMRs vice president and general manager. We will also be working with the Forest Service to approve more glading, brush cutting and an additional rail park for kids in the East River Pod. The high-speed quad will cut the time in half for guests riding the East River chair. As soon as the snow melted, CBMR crews began onmountain work. Snowmaking pipeline was replaced and upgraded to help secure CBMRs commitment to great early-season conditions. Beginner terrain, starting with the Peachtree area, was evaluated and realigned to better suit the needs of the first-time skiers and snowboarders. Snowcat drivers morphed into earth movers for the summer, finishing Prospect Phase IIs infrastructure jobs, CBMRs luxury ski-in/ski-out community. Phase II summer activities included installing two bridges, roads, sewer, water, cable, phone lines and beginning Prospect Phase IV. As winter sets in again, the crews will transform back into nighttime snowcat operators. The additional new Winch Cat will enable them to meet early season opening demands and continue laying out Colorados Best Corduroy throughout the season. Mountain safety for CBMR guests continues to be in the forefront. With that in mind, daily skier safety-awareness teams, complete with radios, have been added to the staff. CBMRs Ski and Snowboard Rental and Repair Shop will see new rental inventory for beginner through advanced skiers and riders. Bubba and Betty Bear, CBMRs longtime mascots, hibernated at a spa in L.A. this summer for a complete makeover. Since we work all winter, summer is our only time to get away. Betty and I cannot wait to show off our new looks this winter. Look for us buffed and fluffed on the slopes. Everyone thought Betty was such a catch before, but just wait, growled Bubba as he and Betty headed west. Real Estate and lodging continue to be the focus of CBMRs plans for the future. The acquisitions of the slope-side Treasury Center, in November 2005, and the Grand Lodge Hotel management and commercial space in the fall of 2006, are key to the success of the new base area Village titled, Mountaineer Square. The redevelopment of the base area and town center will continue for the next several years. The completion of the first phase of the $200-million Mountaineer Square will be visible in the spring of 2007. Plans are now underway for the next phases of the new town center, to be located north of the Grand Lodge Hotel. The ski area central Gothic Building will be leveled and reconstructed in the spring of 2007. Renamed Cimarron, the new building will house the ticket office, ski/snowboard rental, retail, food and beverage outlets and premier resort residences. Ground will be broken next spring at the top of the Red Lady Express Lift for the Red Lady Lodge. The new 15,000-square-foot ski area facility will include full-service restaurant and skier services. Sunlit Architects, a Crested Butte firm, will design the new on-mountain amenity. To complement the pending purchase of the Grand Lodge Hotel management and commercial space, CBMR property management will see an upgrade in technology with new Property Management Systems (PMS), software. The software has a two-way interface with the resorts central reservations call-center Crested Butte Vacations. On-line booking capabilities and cross selling will be two of the most notable improvements. We are upgrading systems with cutting-edge, web-based technology. We will see increased efficiency across the board, said Lynn Kiklevich, CBMRs director of lodging operations. As we continue to move forward, we are creating the Crested Butte Difference, said Barrett. For more info in all of Crested Buttes programs, as well as great package deals from Southern California, Texas or other great locales, please visit www.skicb.com or call 1-800-647-3123. LORD OF THE MANOR Stay at Manor Vail and Youre Golden Special to SKIER NEWS by Jamie Gribbon Vail is one of the premier winter destinations in the U.S. and arguably among the best of the world. Originally the training site of the U.S. Armys 10th Mountain Division, Vail exploded onto the national and international vacation scene over 40 years ago as the place to be seen. Never one to rest on its fame, the town is undergoing a billion dollar renewal effort with new parking, lodging and on-hill improvements in the works. One of the original Vail lodges is the Manor Vail Resort and Conference Center, which offers hotel rooms and fully furnished condos, plus 8,700 square feet of meeting space for those who combine business with pleasure. Manor Vail, which is undergoing its own multi-million dollar renewal, is located at the base of Golden Peak, close to the Golden Peak Lodge. Skiers can suit up in their rooms and walk to the adjacent Riva Bahn lift in minutes. This lift provides access to all the upper mountain terrain yet is less crowded. A complimentary town shuttle can take visitors anywhere in Vail, so there is no need to rent a car. Manor Vail features studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom condominiums as well as hotel rooms. All condos are individually owned and decorated and have a fully equipped kitchen, living room with fireplace and private balcony or patio. Oversized hotel rooms feature private bath and one king or two double beds. Manor Vail is a Premier Resorts property and therefore offers the best of everything for business or pleasure travel. Skiers can leave the slopes and in minutes enter the resorts full service spa, Spa Struck, where an assortment of body treatments will melt tired muscles and soothe body, mind and soul. Spa Struck also offers a host of beauty and skin treatments any day of the week. The spa operates year round; the same goes for the heated pools, hot tubs, steam room, sauna, gym and cardiovascular equipment. Depending on the time of year, visitors can hit the ski resort or golf, play tennis or make the most of a business conference or wedding in total luxury. Since man (or woman) cannot live by snow alone, there is also great first-class dining. The Lord Gore Restaurant with its decadent cuisine and gorgeous views is considered one of the most romantic restaurants in Vail. Before dinner, enjoy a drink in Fitzwilliams Piano Lounge, a favorite après ski spot for locals. Lord Gore was an English nobleman who traveled through what was then wilderness with his companion, Lord Fitzwilliam. The pair explored the American West in style; enjoying meals complete with silver service and fine china despite being in the middle of beautiful nowhere. Premier Resorts took this outlook on life to heart and updated it to meet the standards of 21st century Vail. Sure, the restaurant, lounge and spa are nice, but when it comes right down to it, Manor Vail in winter is all about the skiing. With 5,289 acres, Vail is the largest single mountain ski resort in North America, featuring seven Back Bowls, backcountry skiing in Blue Sky Basin and an incredible variety on the front side including four terrain parks. Vail has 193 trails accessed from 34 lifts; so you can find just about anything. Start your day by warming up on groomed runs. With the worlds most modern snowcat fleet, Vail manicures 1,300 to 1,600 acres every night. For adventure, head to those Back Bowls where you will discover more than 3,000 acres of wide-open terrain that stretches across six miles. Choose your own adventure and make the trip to Manor Vail your perfect vacation. For information on other Premier Resorts throughout western America, Hawaii, Baja California, and South Carolina, log onto www.premier-resorts.com, or call 1-800-542-4253. OGDEN IS UTAHS HOME TO AWARD WINNING SKIING OGDEN, UT Nestled between the 100-mile-long Wasatch Mountain Range and the Great Salt Lake in northern Utah, Weber County is less than 40 minutes from Salt Lake City International Airport. During both summer and winter months, outdoor activities abound in Weber County. Boasting three premier ski resorts, the area offers ample terrain for skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, hiking, biking, wildlife viewing and a variety of other recreational pursuits, all within 30 minutes or less. The locals who frequented the nearby ski resorts knew they had something special, now the skiing public has been made aware via SKI Magazines survey results. Powder Mountain and Snowbasin, a Sun Valley Resort, were recently named as top of their class for snow (Powder Mountain) and lift system (Snowbasin). Powder Mountain has long gentle runs that flow from the top of the mountain, usually left ungroomed or skier groomed. Visitors have many opportunities to make their own lines. If you prefer to go on your own, that is fine also. Powder has a special bus service that travels their access road to pick up skiers who create their own lines. Powders access road is the steepest paved highway in Utah. Snowbasin has two top-to-bottom gondolas and a highspeed quad, so if you are in a hurry you can get a great amount of vertical in a short time. Snowbasin, however, is not a place where you should hurry. The on-mountain lodges are among the finest anywhere, with beautiful marble fireplaces and lavish décor to match the great food served daily. In fact, the large waiting room between the mens room and ladies room at the John Paul Lodge atop Snowbasin is nicer than most hotel lobbies, no kidding. Ski Snowbasin and enjoy its lifts and relax in its base and on-mountain lodges. Staying in Ogden is convenient. There are several name brand hotels including the spacious Marriott with 292 guest rooms and five suites. The hotel is located at 247 24th Street, one short block from Ogdens Historic 25th Street. The convenient downtown Ogden location puts it near restaurants, shops and transportation. You can reach them by calling 801- 627-1190 or logging on to www.ogdenmarriott.com. An advantage of staying at The Marriott in Ogden is the close proximity to the fine restaurants on Historic 25th Street. You can enjoy either the more casual Roosters, at 253 Historic 25th, or Bistro 258, across the street at 258 25th. Both menus feature a variety from lighter fare to steaks and seafood, sure to please everyone in your group. If you are traveling with your entire family then you must visit the Prairie Schooner located at 445 Park Blvd in Ogden. You will love the food that features USDA steaks and your kids will love the atmosphere as you dine inside a re-creation of a prairie schooner overlooking a wagon train campfire. In addition to Roosters and Bistro 258, if you are looking for après ski activities, then look no further than Historic 25th Street. Today Historic 25th, and its adjacent surroundings, are recognized in the national historic registry. A rebirth of construction is revitalizing the area. Historic buildings have been restored to house art galleries, antique shops, pubs, fine and casual dining, and a variety of eclectic shops. Historic 25th Street, the heart of downtown Ogden, is located between Wall Avenue and Washington Boulevard. It is quickly evolving as the entertainment hub of northern Utah. For current information on special community events and the latest in dining, visit www.streetmagazine.net or www.historic25.com. Ogden is quickly becoming a ski hub in its own right. Several ski product companies, such as Scott, Goode, Rossignol and Descente, have relocated their offices, distribution centers or both into this thriving city. Here is more information on those great ski resorts that are all within 30 minutes of Ogden. SNOWBASIN Snowbasin (www.snowbasin.com) was host to the 2002 Winter Olympic downhill, combined and Super G events. This resort boasts 2,650 skiable acres and 11 lifts with skiing and snowboarding on its 53 trails. With an average yearly snowfall of 400 inches and the most advanced snowmaking system in the world, the resort can make both powder and hard-packed racing snow. It also features two terrain parks with rails and tabletops, plus a superpipe serviced by its own tow-lift. For a slightly slower pace, there are 26 miles of cross county ski trails and snowshoeing that provide an opportunity to view the areas wildlife. The resort also includes three opulently decorated day lodges, a skier services building, equipment rental and skiing and snowboarding lessons. POWDER MOUNTAIN Powder Mountain Winter Resort (www.powdermountain.com), is one of the largest resorts in North America. It has more than 5,500 acres of skiing and snowboarding for the entire family on 100 percent real snow. They average 500 inches annually. With seven lifts serving more than 2,800 acres, from groomed cruisers, powder runs, snowcat and heli-skiing to a snowboard terrain park complete with half-pipe, there is a terrain for all skill levels. Amongst its vast acreage, skiers can forge their own path for an off-trail experience and return to the main area via a shuttle service. Powder Mountain also offers on-site accommodations, guided mountain and backcountry tours, skiing and snowboarding lessons, the shuttle service and three lodges. After 30 years, the double chair lift at Hidden Lake was replaced with a high-speed detachable quad. Hidden Lake Express will follow the same path as its predecessor, but the travel time on the lift will be cut in half to about eight minutes. The lift is 6,000 feet in length and rises 1,300 feet. The lift capacity will double to 2,400 persons per hour. The lift was manufactured in Salt Lake City by Doppelmayr CTEC. WOLF CREEK RESORT and WOLF MOUNTAIN With what many consider the best beginners hill in the state, Wolf Creek Resort recently purchased, renovated and renamed Nordic Valley Ski Area to Wolf Mountain in Eden (www.wolfmountaineden.com). It was acquired by Wolf Creek Resort in June of 2005. The owners installed a new snowmaking system. This allows them to provide excellent snow conditions and significantly extend the winter season. The planned opening is in mid-December and closing in early April. The Barn, which houses the skier services and restaurant, received a facelift last season. Prices at Wolf Mountain remain the most affordable in the Rocky Mountain West. According to Steve Roberts, managing partner of Wolf Creek Resort, Our overall vision for our newly expanded resort is family, fun and value. This is such a great learning hill, and by keeping ticket prices low, we hope to lure many new beginners to the sport and give some folks who quit skiing because it became too expensive a chance to return to the sport. They have made learning and improving affordable with their $200 Get On Board package. Beginners receive three lessons, three equipment rental vouchers and when completed they will receive a season pass. This is a great deal to start the season and use the pass the entire winter. Wolf Mountain offers 1,000 vertical feet and averages 300 inches of snow per season, with 15 trails on 100 skiable acres. It is 30 percent beginner, 50 percent intermediate and 20 percent advanced. There are two double chairs. Wolf Mountain offers day and night skiing, and is open every day from 9 a.m. 9 p.m. There is no night skiing on Sundays. Check Wolfs web site, www.wolfmountaineden.com for details on prices, the Get on Board package and lodging. SOLITUDE OFFERS GUESTS MORE EVERY WINTER Solitude Remodels Snowsports Academy, Adds Another New Groomer and New Glades SOLITUDE, UT Solitude Mountain Resort was busy this summer making strides to improve the already world-class resort experience that every Solitude visitor appreciates. This years enhancements include a remodeled Snowsports Academy building, a new snowcat and more glades. The newly remodeled SnowSports Academy, located next to Moonbeam Lodge is a favorite spot for guests this winter. With a better utilization of space, getting through the Academy is a more streamlined and efficient process. Children enrolled in Solitudes popular all-day workshops have more elbow room as well. The addition of the Brown Bag Lounge area downstairs makes the Academy building a perfect central location for visitors with a sack lunch. The Lounge is unique because weve always had guests who bring their own food and felt uncomfortable eating it in one of our lodge dining rooms, says Mike Goar, general manager. Were taking extra steps to make all everyone feel welcome. Solitude added another top-of-the-line BR 350 snowcat to its grooming fleet. That makes one new snowcat in each of the last six years. Solitudes grooming has given new meaning to the term fresh corduroy. In recent years, Solitude has focused on grooming more terrain more consistently. There has also been an emphasis on grooming the steeper blues and blacks for the advanced intermediate looking to set their edges on steeper slopes. In this first of a five-year project, Solitude gladed the Queens Bess area north of the Honeycomb Return Lift, previously ear-marked as an overly dense forest in bad health. This means more of Honeycomb Canyons powder stashes are primed for discovery. By thinning out the forest over a longer period, the resort is allowing the forest to heal between glading sessions, thus ensuring a solid root system and healthy forest for many years to come. Solitude used the lumber from the glading project for parking barricades and other projects. These improvements come less than a year after $6 million was invested in the resort, including the new Moonbeam Lodge, a new electronic ticketing system, upgraded snowmaking and an expanded snowcat fleet. Solitude Mountain Resort, a year-round, family-friendly destination, receives more than 500 inches of the Greatest Snow on Earth every year and is located just 40 minutes from the Salt Lake City International Airport. For more, log on to Solitudes web site www.solitude.com or please call 1-800-748-4754 Parents and Children Alike Benefit from Solitudes New Babysitting Service Parents with children who are not ready for the bunny hill or ski school can rest easy with their young ones in the hands of Solitudes SnowSports Academy. This new babysitting service allows parents to explore Solitudes 1,200 acres of groomers, powder and steeps, while children enjoy their day with a dedicated babysitting staff provided by the Academy. Children 4 years and younger will be treated to coloring, storytelling, snow play, cartoons, naps, and lunch. A secure room in the newly renovated SnowSports Academy building is devoted to this special service. Said Leif Grevle, Solitude is such a popular place for families it made perfect sense to offer a babysitting service. Grevle, who recently celebrated 10 years as Solitudes SnowSports Academy director, went on to note that, including the babysitting service within the Academy allows us to meet the needs of each family in one efficient location. The Academy has considered every detail to make this service as worry and hassle free for a parent as possible, staying with its efficient one-stop and drop philosophy. Once here, children will be cared for in an area of the Academy secluded from other operations, keeping safety at a premium. Parents can be reached at a moments notice via the personal cell phone they are required to carry as well as message boards at each of Solitudes eight lifts. Youngsters who may want to try skiing or snowboarding for part of the day can be enrolled in this babysitting service in conjunction with a lesson, while parents remain on the hill, enjoying their own Solitude. Enrollment in this program is limited to ensure each child gets the attention they deserve. The Academy is prepared to care for children on an hourly, or full- or halfday basis. Solitude recommends 24-hour notice, especially during the more popular times of winter to reserve your child a place. Find more information and rates at www.skisolitude.com. Solitude Mountain Resort, a year-round, family-friendly destination, receives more than 500 inches of the Greatest Snow on Earth every year and is located in the heart of the Cottonwood canyons in scenic Big Cottonwood Canyon. STAY at UTAHS WOLF CREEK RESORT EXPERIENCE WOLF MOUNTAIN, POWDER MOUNTAIN and SNOWBASIN EDEN, UT In 2007 the readers of SKI Magazine rated Powder Mountain No. 1 for Snow and Value and Snowbasin Resort No. 1 for Lifts. Chances are you have probably never heard of either of these resorts amongst Utahs more notorious mountains. What they lack in fame is good news for you, because it means uncrowded slopes, nary a lift-line, and fresh powder, days after a big dump. Both resorts are located in northern Utah, the soft snow capital of the state, just one hour from Salt Lake International Airport. POWDER MOUNTAIN Powder Mountain offers 5,500 aces of in-bounds and backcountry skiing and two unique adventures. Powder Country, a portion of Powder Mountain, is a wideopen series of steep glades and chutes where you pick your own line. Then you ski down to the access road to the resort where a big school bus and friendly driver are waiting to take you back up to more powder stashes. The other unusual experience at Powder is Lightening Ridge. For a nominal fee, a snowcat will pull you along a ridge. You can choose to be dropped off wherever the snow looks most appealing. Upgrading the in-bounds skiing, the resort added the Hidden Lake Express Quad this year, so you will get to that No. 1 rated snow much sooner. SNOWBASIN Snowbasin, a Sun Valley Resort, is across high mountain valley from Powder Mountain. The resort was home to the downhill events during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, so you can test your turning skills on the Grizzly Downhill (Mens) or the Wildflower Downhill (Womens). You can even turn on the same trail as Bode Miller, when his most amazing recovery earned him a silver medal. When it is time for a rest, there are three magnificent day lodges and the finest restrooms anywhere. High-speed gondolas whisk you to almost 3,000 acres amidst rocky ridge lines that remind most skiers of Switzerlands landscape. Once you sample Snowbasin, you will know why SKI Magazine readers rated them No. 1 for Lifts. WOLF MOUNTAIN Wolf Mountain is perfect for those just learning or getting back into the sport. The resort offers a very affordable option with excellent learn to ski & ride programs. It also has a cool and edgy, yet safety minded terrain park, and Utahs largest night skiing operation. Check it out at www.wolfmountaineden.com. Skiers and riders who want to visit these resorts need look no further for accommodations than Valley Lodging at Wolf Creek Resort. With a full assortment of fully outfitted vacation homes and condominiums within 20 minutes of all three mountains, they can accommodate just about any group size. Their friendly staff can assist with your entire post ski adventures, including snowshoeing, sleigh rides, snowmobiling and more. Check them out at www.valleylodging.com WOLF CREEK RESORT Wolf Creek Resort is located in a small town that really is called Eden, just 8 miles up canyon from Ogden, which offers all the urban conveniences with fine dining, shopping and cultural events. The wide-open feel and rural open spaces differentiate this area from Utahs more crowded and congested resort towns. The future is very bright for this family friendly, master-planned community. Wolf Creek Resorts Residents Club program includes an existing par 72 Championship golf course, with an 18 hole private member course on the horizon. The Family Recreation Village will offer every possible amenity for all to enjoy, such as the indoor Adventure Lagoon and Pool, climbing walls, tree houses and playing fields. In addition, there will be a lake for sailing and kayaking, tennis courts, basketball courts and an infinity edge pool. They will also offer a Little Trappers Clubhouse for arts and crafts and a seasonally changing interactive science exhibit so the kids can learn how all that stuff out there in the world actually works. There will also be a Day Care Cabin for the little ones, and a fully trained staff will be on hand to provide endless enjoyment. Trails meander through dense forests of trees so your kids will never know what they will find next, perhaps a teepee, an old tire swing or a fishing pond. Endless opportunities for discovery will be offered. For quieter enjoyment, the new Members Lodge overlooking the 18th green will offer his and hers locker rooms, a Club Room, indoor pool, fitness facility, a family theater room and a full service day Spa. The Residents Club program is so full of fun and value that its no wonder so many folks come out for a vacation quickly decide they want to join the Club and become property owners.
