COLORADO RESORTS

MOUNTAINEER SQUARE RESHAPES CRESTED BUTTE'S BASE VILLAGE

The planning, the pounding, the pay-off: MT. CRESTED BUTTE, CO – After three years of intense work on the drawing boards and then inside the construction barricades, Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) will greet guests this winter with dramatic evidence of their “reinvention.”

Most striking among the changes is the opening of Mountaineer Square, a focal point of the base area that is being reshaped under owners Tim and Diane Mueller. However, the refinements will touch all areas of the resort, including renovation of the former Club Med; on-mountain improvements; and DC Superpipe and Park construction. Planning, permitting and eventual construction of the Red Lady Lodge, restaurant remodels, rental and ski school relocations, and snowmaking and safety upgrades complete the list.

“We’re excited to continue the momentum created by our owners,” said Randy Barrett, CBMR vice president and general manager. “Each year we raise the bar, with improvements and additions throughout the resort. It’s gratifying to give our phenomenal ski mountain the attention it deserves, and to give our guests the vacations they dream about.”

Mountaineer Square Takes Shape

The first phase of the $200-million base village rose from drawing board to reality this summer when The Lodge at Mountaineer Square and the Mountaineer Conference Center opened their doors for guests and groups.

The Lodge at Mountaineer Square is CBMR’s newest luxury property, featuring hotel and condominium accommodations. The Lodge surrounds the Mountaineer Conference Center and is located steps from the ski lift. The conference facility offers 9,000-square-feet of flexible meeting space that can be configured to accommodate all types of gatherings and events.

The lodge and conference center wrap around a cozy courtyard that contains visitor services, dining and shopping. Here the Crested Butte Adventure Center serves as the “resort concierge,” a one-stop shopping site for skiing, riding and outdoor activities. Visitors can buy lift tickets, book Crested Butte Mountain Schools lessons and clinics, make dinner reservations, find out about activities like snowmobiling or horseback riding, or just ask directions to a great local watering hole. Those who want to make a beeline to the slopes can purchase lift tickets at the automated ticket kiosk.

Phase two of Mountaineer Square will take shape over the next two years. Crews will “deconstruct” the Gothic Building and launch the updated, upscale Cimarron. The new building will house the lift ticket office, ski and snowboard rental, retail shops, restaurants and premier resort residences.

To complement the new mountain village, the former Club Med Crested Butte will be transformed into a four-star, skiin/ ski-out luxury property renamed the Elevation Hotel and Spa. Sun Vest Communities, USA, purchased the property and is partnering IMG Academies in the $25-million renovation. CBMR will manage and operate the commercial space of the Elevation Hotel and Spa.

Mountain Master Plan in Final Stages of Approval

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires federal agencies like the Forest Service to integrate environmental values into their decision making by considering the environmental impacts of proposed actions. NEPA also stipulates that the government should use all practicable means to create and maintain conditions under which man and nature can exist in productive harmony. CBMR is in the “onsite” stages of an environmental assessment of the Main Mountain Improvement Plan. The plan includes new lifts, lift additions, realignments and replacements, additional snowmaking, glading, new trails, and restaurant additions and expansions. This final “blessing” by the Forest Service will enable CBMR to proceed with planned upgrades, additions and overhauls to the main mountain over the next five to seven years.

DC Partners with CB

DC Shoes and CBMR have joined forces in a three-year commitment to create, customize and configure a state-ofthe- art DC Terrain Park and DC Superpipe. Chris “Gunny” Gunderson of Snowpark Technologies (SPT) will work with CBMR snowcat operators and park crews to develop this new nirvana for riders going for challenges and thrills. With the newest in rails, boxes and other features, the terrain parks will cater to riders of all ages and abilities.

Snowmaking, Snowcats and Trail Upgrade

This year CMBR will build on its commitment to excellent early-season skiing, season-long riding on “Colorado’s best corduroy,” and its world-famous Extreme Limits. Investments include better and more extensive snowmaking in the Gold Link/Prospect terrain and snowcat replacement/upgrades. In addition, money will be spent on significant brush cutting on all trails and the Extreme Limits, and tree clearing on Peachtree runs with the help of the “Quality Circle” – a select group of CB Mountain Schools instructors.

“These seemingly minor investments add up to a noticeably better product overall, and enable us to give people great skiing and boarding from day one of the ski season,” said Barrett.

Final touches

Not to be forgotten in the hub of activity at CBMR, CB Mountain Schools will relocate to the Axtel Building at the base of the Silver Queen lift. In addition, Crested Butte’s Slope Safety Patrols will increase, donning sporty new uniforms and refining the on-slope signage.

In the culinary realm, CBMR will re-theme the former Woodstone Grille at the Grand Lodge. More and better seating at Paradise Warming House will allow more guests to dine in comfort.

“All these large and small improvements show our commitment to our guests and their experience in Crested Butte,” Barrett said. “We want people to enjoy every aspect of the time they spend with us.”

RECORD $16 MILLION in MOUNTAIN UPGRADES TO COMPLEMENT STEAMBOAT UNBRIDLED

Christie Peak Express, Headwall Re-Grade & Snowmaking Lead List of On-Mountain Improvements;

Steamboat Unbridled & Resort Projects Invest Nearly $40 Million In Steamboat Experience

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO – For the 2007-08 season, the Steamboat Ski Area will make on-mountain improvements valued at a record of more than $16 million. This complements the $23 million in Steamboat Unbridled revitalization projects over the next three years.

“These changes mark the launch of nearly $40 million in vast and comprehensive improvements to the entire Steamboat vacation experience and will be the first step in significantly advancing the resort’s competitive position over the next decade,” said Chris Diamond, president of the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation.

Most of the on-mountain capital will go towards the installation of the new Christie Peak Express six-pack chairlift, removal of several chairlifts in the base area, Headwall slope re-grade, significant snowmaking improvements and enhancements to the Meadows parking facility.

“Make no mistake, even with all of these incredible changes, what makes Steamboat different and what is at the heart of the Steamboat experience will not change. Steamboat is legendary for its genuine, warm friendliness and a town that’s roots are deeply set in the real West. These attributes are what set Steamboat apart and will remain a main stay of the experience!” said AndyWirth, vice president of sales and marketing.

On-Mountain Improvements

Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation will install a Leitner- Poma of America high-speed, six-passenger chairlift that will replace three lifts (Preview, Headwall and Christie II) in the base area. The lower terminal of the new lift will be near the former location of the lower Headwall terminal. It will have an angle station with unload capabilities just above the top of Southface. The lift will end at the top of Christie Peak where Christie II currently unloads. Christie Peak Express will have a length of roughly 4,700 feet and a capacity to move 3,200 people per hour, which is 400 more per hour than the Gondola. The new express lift will cut the ride time to the summit of Christie Peak from 15 to 4.8 minutes. It will offset its electricity requirements by alternative energy, joining the wind-powered Burgess Creek and solar/wind-powered Sunshine Express lifts.

“The new Christie Peak Express will radically change the entire lower mountain experience and unlock its untapped potential while at the same time acting as a redundancy back up for the gondola,” said Doug Allen, vice president of mountain operations.

In addition, five magic carpets (Tenderfoot, Colt, Filly, Tumbleweed and Sidewinder) located throughout the base area will be upgraded, realigned and lengthened. The new Preview lift, using the repositioned Southface lift, will be realigned to conform to the regrading of the beginner terrain, extend further up Headwall and increase capacity from a double to a triple chairlift.

In association with the re-grade, the beginner trails of Main Drag and Boulevard, located off Christie Peak, will be merged into one trail. This will significantly improve the width while maintaining a constant 10 percent grade, considered ideal for beginner or novice skier. A 40- foot platform is wide enough to comfortably handle larger volumes anticipated from the new six-passenger lift, while giving novice skiers the feeling of a mountain trail as opposed to a catwalk.

“The consistent grade developed from these modifications as well as the new high-speed, sixpassenger lift will be vital to providing the best learn-to-ski/ride experience available in years for our guests,” said Jim Schneider, vice president of skier services.

Steamboat will add new low energy, high-efficiency snowmaking guns, which use 30 percent less energy than conventional guns while producing the same amount of snow Upgrades to five of the primary pump houses will also take place over the summer. These improvements enhance water management, increase capacity, and reduce energy consumption while continuing to provide the highest safety levels possible. It will cover 375 acres of top-to-bottom terrain – 3,600 vertical feet over 35 trails.

Building upon the more than $1 million in renovations to the on-mountain food courts last year, the Thunderhead kids’ cafeteria will undergo improvements. They include the addition of a new entryway on the north side of the building as well as the upgrading of interior components. The new entryway will provide exclusive access for groups while reducing the traffic and congestion in the main Thunderhead entry portal. The second floor cafeteria is reserved solely for the kids’ ski/snowboard program.

The remote parking facility, theMeadows, will undergo changes as the lot is expanded by more than 38,000 square feet on the north end. The new expansion will be able to accommodate just over 140 additional parking spaces, bringing the total for this free, shuttle-serviced lot to roughly 1,035 parking spaces. The resort will implement the first phase of an all-inclusive plan to replace all onmountain trail signage as well as incorporate new iconic elements for the six individual peaks such as Storm Peak, Sunshine Peak and Thunderhead Peak. The new, re-designed signs will significantly advance communication at essential location points across the mountain and enrich directional elements. Signage will be broken into three distinct categories: directional/informational will be in black, trail signs in steel blue and emergency information in red.

Having already been credited with saving the lives of several individuals, the resort will add six additional automated external defibrillator (AED) units. The units are capable of viewing and recording cardiac rhythms as well as administering life-saving cardiac shocks. The resort first purchased an AED Life Pak 300 during the 1992-93 season. Currently, the resort employs twelveAED units in its rapid response cache.

Additionally, upgrades and improvement projects will take place across several departments and comprise the remainder of the capital improvements for the resort.

Steamboat Unbridled

Over 40 years ago, the world-class ski area now called Steamboat was established by pioneering visionaries whose spirit still remains strongly embedded in the experience today. Now, visionaries of today with the same unique, unbridled and pioneering spirit are forming the vision for the next decade of Steamboat.

“Steamboat Unbridled represents a renaissance of the mountain, its base area, retail and dining establishments, a transformed Steamboat/Hayden Airport, as well as exciting, new real estate developments,” explained Wirth. “In all, it’s anticipated that nearly $1 billion over the coming years will be invested in Steamboat Unbridled. Many of these changes are already underway and numerous projects will begin take shape over the coming years.”

PEAK PROPERTY KEEPS IT FRIENDLY IN BRECKENRIDGE

BRECKENRIDGE, CO — If you had the opportunity, would you call a friend that knew all about your next vacation destination?

Suppose that friend had lived in the area for years and knew the nicest places to stay, the best restaurants to sample, and the fun activities to try. There is one company in Breckenridge, Colo. that has that kind of knowledge, Peak Property Management. Your friends, in this case, are people who live and play in Breckenridge. They know the best places and have all the answers. Peak Property Management has been in Breckenridge since 1986 helping homeowners and guests from all over the world.

They offer complete travel packages, custom packages and vacation specials to this beautiful and historic town. Your packages can include lodging, lift tickets, airfare, and ground transportation. Peak Property has locations throughout Breckenridge. Choose from ski-in/ski-out, shuttle serviced or secluded sites. These properties range in size from studios to 7- bedroom homes. All of the properties are close to the charming Victorian town and the Breckenridge Ski Resort.

When you start to plan your trip, ask yourself these questions: What dates will we arrive and depart the resort? Consider some of the special travel dates during the year. The Ski-Free/Stay-Free program offers a free night of lodging and can include a free day of skiing for each adult in the party (requires at least a four-night stay and purchase of a multi-day lift ticket). This long-standing program is in effect before and after Christmas week. The sixth annual Breckenridge Spring Massive Festival occurs April 1 - April 22, 2007. You can enjoy concerts, competitions, celebrity racing, nightlife, exhibitions, jams, film shoots, kid’s activities, and the legendary spring conditions for which Breckenridge is famous. Other traditional events like the Lighting of Breckenridge on Dec. 2, International Snow Sculpture Championships held in January, and the Ullr Fest winter carnival also in January, might influence your travel dates. Peak Property offers special lodging rates during each of these events.

Next, ask how many people are in the group and what kind of accommodations will we need (are there couples or single people)? Are there any locations or amenities that we wanted (does it have to be close to the slope or more secluded)? Your lodging is usually the most important part of your travel package, so chose a property that meets everyone’s expectations. If you had always dreamed of a cabin in the woods, let the agent know. Maybe being close to town and the slopes is more important to your group.

Finally, determine how you are going to get to Breckenridge, by flying or driving? Peak Property offers discounted airfare that can be better than advertised specials or Internet fares. Will you need to rent a car? If so, what kind of car would suit your needs? Also, compare rental car rates against airport shuttle fares. Based on the location of your lodging, you may not need to rent a car and can leave the driving (and gas prices) to someone else. Many times, the comparison can save you money.

Complete your travel package with the following: snowmobile tours, sleigh rides, dog sledding, fly-fishing, horseback riding, hot air balloon flights, scenic tours and more. The choices are yours.

Contact the friendly staff at Peak Property Management and they will customize your vacation package to Breckenridge, Colo.

Call them at 1-800-458-7998, or e-mail your request or questions directly to: info@peakproperty.com.

FINDING THE CHARM of BRECKENRIDGE THROUGH SKI VILLAGE RESORTS

Special to SKIER NEWS by WENDY DANIEL

When I was growing up in Breckenridge, Colo., in the early 1970s, I never gave a second thought to the old cabins, the abandoned mines and the various stories people told about the history of this small mountain town. All I knew was that the mountains provided the perfect winter playground for whatever activities I could dream up.

I had recently had a strong desire to hop on westbound I-70, from my Denver home, to visit the mountains and the freedom of my youth. I wanted to share all of this history and adventure with my family, but first we needed a place to stay.

A friend of mine recommended I contact Ski Village Resorts. She had stayed with them many times and was never disappointed. So I decided to check out their web site, www.skivillageresorts.com, before I jumped into anything. Everything seemed straightforward. They had photographs of all their properties readily available. There was a description of every unit, and it was easy to tell exactly where I would be staying.

After doing some serious research on their web site, I decided I was ready to take the next step. The next morning I gave them a call at 1- 888-972-8200 and was greeted by a polite woman who answered all of my questions. We booked a four-day vacation in a three-bedroom town home. I was excited about our adventure as I rounded-up the kids, packed our bags and headed for the hills.

The check-in was easy and friendly. We quickly found our rental unit and unpacked. Feeling extremely relieved and relaxed, I loaded up the boys for a trip down memory lane. Main Street is still the heart and soul of the town. This old Victorian town still has the facades of the past. Over the next two days I took the boys skiing, skating, and sledding. There was so much to do and family memories to be made.

Every time I call Ski Village Resorts and book another vacation, I know that those feelings of freedom and the crisp mountain air are just around the corner. And rest assured, the white gold that covers the Rockies is no less precious than the gold they found within almost 150 years ago. Life is short, our time here is to be treasured.

You can contact Ski Village Resorts by calling their toll-free number, 1-888-972-8200, where you will reach their office and speak to an in-house receptionist/travel specialist.

You can also log on to www.skivillageresorts.com either directly or via a link on the homepage of www.skiernews.com or you may also e-mail them at skivillage@colorado.net

THE CANYONS REDEFINES EXCELLENCE with NEW LIFT, TERRAIN and LODGING

PARK CITY, UT – The powder in Utah, widely regarded as the fluffiest snow in the world, regularly dumps on theWasatch Range. Luckily for winter vacationers, the charming town of Park City is nestled in the middle of the Wasatch, while being only 35 minutes from the Salt Lake International Airport.

Choices abound for activities in Park City. The town is home to three excellent resorts and Utah Olympic Park. Deer Valley, Park CityMountain Resort and The Canyons Resort are within four miles of each other. Each winter it hosts the Sundance Film Festival and in 2002, it was used for several venues of the Salt Lake CityWinter Olympics. In fact, NBC’s Today Show broadcast everyday from The Canyons during the Olympics, showcasing the resort.

The Canyons Resort is one of the secrets of the North American ski scene. This longtime local favorite has over 3,700 acres spanning eight mountains with 155 trails and a run for every level of skier. The fourth largest resort in the US has a bit of something for everyone, including two terrain parks and six natural half pipes. With the amount of terrain on the hill and the number of lifts available, the lift lines are rarely more then a few moments long, so the mountain never feels crowded. It is even possible to find untracked powder two or three days after a big dump.

During the past 15 months, the management has invested more than $10 million in the resort. A new section known as Dream- Catcher encompasses more than 200 acres with a new quad chair accessing some of the greatest tree skiing in the West. You can also spend a fantastic morning in the area zooming past the huge homes in the gated ski in/ski out community called The Colony while you tackle you choice of double blacks, blacks and blues.

By lunchtime, you can ski your way back to the mid-mountain area for a quick bite at the renovated Red Pine Lodge. Sit outside on the patio to people watch or enjoy the majestic scenery from the expanded second floor with its floor to ceiling windows.

Red Pine Lodge is also where First Tracks, the private mountain guided experience, ends with a wonderful breakfast. First Tracks meets every Wednesday and Saturday at The Flight of The Canyons gondola at 7 am for an early morning chair. Reservations, available through The Canyons Ski and Snowboard School, are mandatory, as the spaces are very limited. It is an absolute must do and an experience you will never forget as you slice through what amounts to your own private mountain.

The Canyons has many options for lodging, dining and spa services directly at the base of the mountain within a short walk to the Flight of The Canyons gondola. The Grand Summit Hotel, The Sundial Lodge and the brand new Silverado Lodge, all managed by the resort, offer many room choices. The very popular Ski Free program is a popular choice. When you book the Ski Free package, either online or via the central reservations number, you get two free lift tickets per night. It is always a great idea to check the Hot Deals section of the website of the resort, as new packages pop up frequently. The Canyons makes an affordable winter vacation possible and easy.

The Cabin Restaurant at The Grand Summit Hotel is one of Park City’s finest dining choices. Chef Joseph Trevino took over the helm last fall and has infused energy into the kitchen, ensuring exceptional food for diners. Chef Trevino is always exploring new menu items and uses local ingredients for items such as his signature Utah trout dish. Equally as impressive is the ski in/ski out lunch spot Lookout Cabin. A premier on-mountain dining restaurant, Lookout Cabin offers visitors the chance to sit down, relax and refuel before heading out for an afternoon on the slopes.

The events at The Canyons bring out both locals and destination skiers. In the spring, there is a free concert series every Saturday afternoon in the resort village area. Live music fuels the après ski scene. What is better than finishing a gorgeous day on the hill with a party and live music? The end of March is the epicenter of fun at The Canyons with the annual Pond Skimming contest. Pond Skimming at The Canyons is much anticipated and now a legendary event. Contestants dress in outrageous costumes, come screaming down a launch site and skim across a very cold pond outside Red Pine Lodge. There is a DJ spinning tunes, celebrity judges and wild antics that get everyone howling. This event is not to be missed.

Actually, The Canyons is not to be missed. The resort has many developments under construction at the base area. It will have over 12 properties coming on line within the next three to five years, including a Golden Door Spa in the Dakota Mountain Lodge, which just broke ground. With more lodging, retail and restaurant opportunities becoming available at The Canyons plus the incredible natural landscape of one of the greatest mountains in the world, it is a resort to explore year after year.

Nearly every one of their blue and all green trails are manicured with a fine carpet of corduroy. Boasting phenomenal views and consistent conditions, a family can find several dozen runs to explore together. For the more adventurous, the terrain in Honeycomb Canyon will not disappoint. Awaiting your exploration are 400 acres of trees, bowls, chutes and steeps. Honeycomb is provides an out-of-bounds experience in a safe and controlled environment, which serves as the perfect gateway to backcountry powder skiing. As your skills and desires expand, Solitude offers guided backcountry tours for upper-level skiers to unlock additional secret powder stashes adjacent to the resort.

Adults will find many options to help them attain the next level at the Academy as well.

Once the chairs stop turning, Solitude’s Village is where your family will want to be. Always a vacation favorite, as well as the center of the Village, is the snow bank-rimmed ice-skating rink It features a fire-pit to warm frozen hands, and for making S’mores. Creekside’s fare, inspired by the Tuscan region of Italy, suits a wide range of tastes, in a family-friendly fine dining setting. The award-winning St. Bernard’s menu easily could be that of a restaurant in the French countryside, while the same goes for the quality and presentation of their food. With an extensive wine list, Saint B’s is the ultimate finedining establishment.

For the more adventurous diner, there is the Yurt. Begin by donning skis or snowshoes for a short trek through to moonlit forest to a Mongolian Yurt. Here, a chef will prepare a five-course meal in front of your eyes and create memories that you will surely always remember. OGDEN, UT – The commitment to excellence of Snowbasin Resort promises a memorable ski experience for all. You will discover a first lady of ski resorts, wild but tame. It will beckon you to explore, ski, dine, push your skiing limits and then it will make you want to return.

Three distinct areas and the 26 kilometers of groomed Nordic trails lie across the vast panorama of Snowbasin Resort. John Paul Area, with its double black diamonds, is named for John Paul Jones, a 10th Mountain Division Medic who lost his life on the ascent of Riva Ridge. The area continuously reflects the legends of the Tenth Mountain Troops. Let their extraordinary mountain feats inspire you to challenge the expert terrain and test your skills on the men’s and women’s downhill.

Perched directly below the spine of the Wasatch and Middle Bowl Cirque in Needles area is Needles Lodge. Reminiscent of the grand National Park Lodges of the 1920’s and 30’s, European flair resonates at 8,750 feet. It is the stepping off point for lunch and pointing your skis downhill. The spirit of Snowbasin exists here in the memories of skiers since 1939.

The Strawberry Area, where the woods disappear, unfolds miles of open terrain. The mountains of Snowbasin have an uncanny way of blending your family’s skiing experience. This allows you to ski different types of terrain, yet be together.

Snowbasin has three exceptional day lodges: Earl’s Lodge, Needles Lodge, and John Paul Lodge. Together they offer choices that cover every appetite, from light and simple fare to international cuisine. Salt Lake Magazine recently named Earl’s Lodge the best restaurant in Northern Utah. Earl’s is the home of No-Name Lounge, a lively après ski spot. Earl’s Lodge is named for the owner of Snowbasin, Mr. Earl Holding, who also owns Sun Valley and Little and Grand America hotels in Salt Lake City.

The two enclosed high-speed gondolas at Snowbasin will extend your skiing power, protect you on snowy days and allow you to increase your vertical accomplishments with respite from the elements. State-of-the-art snowmaking, covering over 600 acres, helps ensure a Thanksgiving to Easter season. If you are looking for corduroy, the fleet of snowcats grooms the slopes all night for your delight in the morning.

Grizzly Cub’s Den is all about kids, snowsports and fun. It is truly a magical place just for kids. Day Care at Snowbasin welcomes children in a cozy, fun, safe, environment that is convenient for parents. State licensed day care is available seven days a week.

Have your best day on the slopes with one of the PSIA/AASI Certified Snowsports Instructors. The resort offers a personalized learning environment that can improve anyone’s skiing skills. Snowbasin is a short drive from Ogden, located near the small town of Huntsville, Utah.

Snowbasin (www.snowbasin.com) was host to the 2002 Winter Olympic downhill, combined and Super G events. This resort boasts 2,650 skiable acres and 11 lifts with skiing and snowboarding on its 53 trails. With an average yearly snowfall of 400 inches and the most advanced snowmaking system in the world, the resort can make both powder and hard-packed racing snow. OGDEN HAS AN HISTORIC PAST and a SNOW LOVER'S PRESENT with LODGING and RESORT ACTIVITIES

OGDEN, UT – Ogden and the Upper Ogden Valley offers much for destination skiers and it is just 40 minutes north of Salt Lake International Airport. Skiers and boarders can choose Powder Mountain, Snowbasin and Wolf Mountain to spend their days. At night, both Ogden and the Upper Valley sport a wide range of lodging and entertainment. Ogden has properties ranging from the Ogden Marriott, a beautiful, full-service hotel, to motels, while the Upper Valley has a mix of new condominiums, B&Bs;and boutique lodges.

Ogden offers locally owned restaurants, shopping and galleries on Historic 25th Street. The fine-dining Bistro 258 and the Roosters Brewpub offer excellent food. The Prairie Schooner has great food in a setting that must be seen to be appreciated. All of these have been tested and are highly recommended by our SKIER NEWS staff as great options for dinner.

At the foot of 25th is Union Station, housing the Utah State Railroad Museum, the John M. Browning Firearms Museum, Eccles Rail Center, Browning-Kimball Car Museum and Natural History Museum.

Built in the heart of the downtown, The Junction honors the railroad history of Ogden as the Crossroads of the West. It is a new mixed-use development of restaurants, entertainment venues, and commercial and residential properties. The centerpiece is the Salomon Center, boasting an IRock climbing facility, a Flowrider surf wave and an IFly sky diving tower. This provides an opportunity to extend your outdoor adventures to indoors. The building also includes a 32-lane bowling alley, a billiard room, an arcade with bumper cars and miniature golf, two restaurants, and a sports bar. The Salomon Center also has Gold’s Gym for anyone who did not get enough exercise on the slopes.

Ogden is quickly becoming a ski hub with several product companies relocating there. Recently Scott, Goode, Rossignol, and Descente moved their offices and/or their distribution centers to Ogden. . The Salomon Center is named for one of Ogden’s new corporate citizens. Amer Sports consolidated its Winter and Outdoor Sports divisions and recently relocated to Ogden. Atomic, Salomon and Suunto also call Ogden home.

Ogden and the Upper Ogden Valley are home to outdoor sport enthusiasts who walk the walk and hike the hike. When they are not on the snow, they are hiking, trail running biking, paddling, climbing, bouldering, fly fishing and volunteering. Local residents help make the annual Spring Run-off Marathon, the Xterra Mountain Championship, the Ogden Valley Balloon Festival and the Harvest Moon/Mountain to Metro Games critically acclaimed events. Team Unlimited, who produces the Xterra off-road triathlon series, recently picked Ogden and Snowbasin as the home for the Xterra Winter World Championship. Organizers credited both the venue and strong local volunteer support as the basis of their decision. This event will include snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, trail running and rondenee skiing for both professionals and amateurs.

The Upper Valley is often a choice for visitors looking for the quiet and starry nights of a beautiful high mountain valley. The vistas include mountains on all sides. Restaurant choices include the Wolf Creek Grille and the Rusty Cactus at Wolf Creek Resort. Also recommended by locals is Harley and Bucks Grill in the old Eden General Store. For some local color, try a burger at the Shooting Star Saloon in Huntsville. It is the oldest continuously operating bar in the state of Utah.

Well, what about the skiing and riding? Powder Mountain has 5,500 acres of terrain of which 2,800 acres is lift serviced. The rest can be accessed via snow cat, helicopter or short hikes. Last winter the new Hidden Lake highspeed quad was a welcome change that cut the ride time in half. Powder Mountain received national acclaim last year when SKI readers named them No. 1 in both snow and value in their annual survey. For those who cannot get enough during the day, Powder offers night skiing off the Sundown lift.

Not to be outdone, Snowbasin claimed No. 1 in lifts and No. 3 in service in the SKI readers’ survey. As host to the 2002 Olympic Men’s and Women’s Downhill, Super-G and Combined Events, Snowbasin displayed to the world its great terrain that locals have enjoyed for over 65 years. The day lodges and food service are unparalleled in the ski industry. Earl’s Lodge was recently named the best restaurant in Northern Utah by Salt Lake Magazine. The resort also has 25 km of groomed Nordic and snowshoe trails, as well as lift-serviced tubing.

As mentioned earlier, Snowbasin will host the inaugural Xterra Winter World Championships March 8 and 9, 2008. The United States Snowshoe Championships will also take place on March 8.

Wolf Mountain is the best learning mountain in Utah. Inexpensive tickets and night skiing make it attractive to both locals and visitors. It has its challenges, as can attest local ski racers and freestyle riders, who train on the slopes and in the Terrain Park.

One of the finest choices the Upper Ogden Valley, near the town of Eden is the Red Moose Lodge. The Red Moose offers 27 spacious rooms and a variety of suites, all on the first floor. There is a free continental breakfast, free high-speed Internet and a shuttle to the nearby Powder, Wolf and Snowbasin ski areas. After a day of endless cruising at Snowbasin or hitting the deep stuff at Powder, you will be glad your lodging is nearby.

The lift capacity will double to 2,400 persons per hour. The lift was manufactured in Salt Lake City by Doppelmayr CTEC.

WOLF CREEK RESORT and WOLF MOUNTAIN

SKI SALT LAKE DELIVERS THE ULTIMATE EXTENDED WEEKEND with SUPER-PASS

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – The answer is Ski Salt Lake. For all you Jeopardy fans out there, here’s the question: Who can give you the most accessible, most convenient and most affordable three-day winter weekend?

Salt Lake and the Cottonwood Canyon resorts are among the most accessible world-class winter vacation destinations in the world. Whether you live on the East or West Coast, or somewhere in between, it is likely there is a non-stop flight with your name on it, just begging to whisk you away to the Wasatch Mountains.

With the addition of several more non-stop flights this year, Delta now offers over 114 non-stop destinations to and from Salt Lake. It is a likely scenario that you can leave your humble abode on an early flight and be skiing at Alta, Brighton, Snowbird or Solitude by noon. Please check Delta’s schedule to Salt Lake for accessing convenient flight times.

Once in Salt Lake, skiers and snowboarders have well over 20,000 beds on which to rest their weary heads after an exhilarating day on the mountain. Hotels range from affordable to opulent. The Grand America Hotel, located in downtown Salt Lake City, pampers guests with fivestar service and amenities. Sample the fresh seafood at the all-you-can-eat seafood buffet, or soothe those aching muscles at the world-class spa. Imported textiles adorn the lavish walls as spotless marble floors echo live piano music in the lobby.

Winter vacationers looking for more affordable luxury can choose from any number of moderately priced hotels that are located downtown or several miles south in Sandy. Most properties offer reasonably priced ski/snowboard packages. Often times these packages include meals and transportation in addition to lodging and skiing or snowboarding.

Add the Ski Salt Lake Super Pass to the mix, and the three-day winter weekend becomes more convenient and affordable than ever. Celebrating a “decade of discount”, the Super Pass, now in its 10th season, has gained a loyal following among budget-conscious skiers and snowboarders everywhere. Load the pass with anywhere from one to seven days of skiing/snowboarding at any of the four Cottonwood Canyon resorts, and the rest is history. Don’t bother with a rental car if you dread winter driving— the Super Pass includes public transportation on Utah Transit Authority’s ski buses. This means skiers and snowboarders can make it to and from the mountain from several locations in and around Salt Lake without ever stepping on the gas.

Utah’s ski resort association, SKI UTAH, reports that all 13 Utah resorts have significant upgrades for this season. After the fourth consecutive year of record-breaking attendance, the state’s resorts have worked hard to further improve the skiing experience in Utah.

Here is what is new on the slopes for the four Ski Salt Lake resorts.

ALTA SKI AREA

Alta is implementing a skier-friendly, web-friendly, hands-free ticketing system. All ski products will be loaded on the Alta Card, which will have an RFID (radio frequency identification) chip embedded in it to allow access through entry gates to the lifts. The hands-free system means no more showing a pass at every lift. Skiers place the Alta Card, with a valid ski product loaded on it, inside a pocket by itself and leave it there for the day. Antennas will do the rest. At the end of the day, skiers can visit alta.com and enter the Web ID on the Alta Card to personalize the card, track their ski history and reload the card. On the next ski day, skiers can go straight to the lifts and skip the extra stop at the ticket office.

Alta Ski Area is a Visionary Partner with Rocky Mountain Power through the Blue Sky program. Alta’s commitment to clean, renewable wind energy is reflected in its promise to purchase 900,000 kilowatt-hours for the next 12-month period, offsetting over 23 percent of Alta’s traditional energy consumption. The environmental impact is equivalent to avoiding 900 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

BRIGHTON RESORT

Brighton’s big news is the New Millicent High Speed Quad. The lift will replace the Evergreen and Millicent Chair lifts. The Millicent Chair was the first lift installed at Brighton in 1947 and then rebuilt to a Lift Engineering Chair in 1974. The new lift is a $4.2 million Doppelmayr CTEC Detachable Quad. The lift will be 3,920 feet long with a vertical rise of 1,110 feet. Brighton skiers will be able to enjoy a quick, safe trip, with great terrain on the Millicent side of the mountain. When the lift is finished, Brighton will be unique in that 100 percent of its terrain will be accessible by high-speed lifts.

SNOWBIRD SKI & SUMMER RESORT

Snowbird installed more snowmaking in Peruvian Gulch, providing snowmaking coverage from the top of the new Peruvian Express lift to the bottom.

Snowbird modified a segment of Chips Run to make the terrain more intermediate-skier friendly.

Big Mountain Camps: In 2008, Dean Cummings brings his Big Mountain Camps for skiers and snowboarders to Snowbird, providing guests with the ultimate big mountain experience.

SOLITUDE MOUNTAIN RESORT

Solitude Mountain Resort celebrates their Golden Anniversary. Fifty years ago, the first skiers descended off the slopes of Solitude in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Now boasting 1,200 acres of uncrowded terrain, including Honeycomb Canyon and a European style lodging village, Solitude has truly grown into a world-class resort. This monumental season will be celebrated with historical podcasts and retro events.

MAMMOTH LAKES, CA – The Westin Monache Resort, Mammoth, scheduled to have opened its doors this past fall 2007, brings with it a hotel brand recognized the world over for its high level of four-star service and amenities. The property is also one of the first luxury flagged condo-hotels to open in California.

The 230-condominium Westin Monache Resort (pronounced “mon-ah-she”), will be the first full-service, upscale property in a region becoming increasingly popular with its loyal Southern California following and with vacationers from around the country. One of the fastest-growing mountain destinations in North America, Mammoth is located in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, south of Reno and northeast of Los Angeles.

The resort is one of the top three most visited ski areas in the U.S. and California’s most popular four-season mountain destination. In addition, Mammoth ranked in the top 10 for Skiing Magazine’s Top 25 Resorts for the 2006-07 season and has been ranked the No. 1 overall resort in North America by TransWorld.

This newest and most luxurious example of Mammoth Lakes lodging will offer an ideal location in The Village at Mammoth, adjacent to Mammoth Mountain’s 15-passenger express gondola. Among its many amenities, The Westin Monache Resort will include stunning panoramic views of the mountains, a full service restaurant, and 24-hour room service. In addition, it will have a ski valet and rental shop, a pool and hot tubs, fitness facilities, underground parking, and more than 2,000 square feet of meeting space. The property will feature a contemporary elegance that redefines mountain lodging.
