SKIER NEWS' GENERAL UPDATE for
May 7 - May 11

The "SNOW YEAR of the CENTURY" as dubbed by SKIER NEWS DOES NOT WANT TO QUIT! More snow in Colorado (head to A-basin, use link below)...

MAY DAYS - MORE SNOW IN COLORADO!
PROOF OF GLOBAL WARMING!!! (use link)

Most Colorado resorts are closed, but A-Basin keeps going with new snow.

In Utah, Snowbird continues to enjoy Spring-like temps and SNOW, Little Cloud Lift Open.
Snowbird, Utah – With more than 11 feet of snow on the ground at mid-mountain, Snowbird has announced it will extend its season into June and possibly beyond.
Snowbird President Bob Bonar said today he feels confident the resort will be able to offer skiing and riding daily through Sunday, May 11, and then Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through June 1 (including Monday, May 26, Memorial Day).

“With last week’s storm and additional precipitation this week it looks like we’ll have plenty of snow for great skiing through the last weekend of May, beginning of June,” said Bonar. “We will continue to offer skiing and riding as long as the conditions are safe, enjoyable and there’s interest.” Snowbird lifts have run as late as July 4 in two previous seasons
Bonar said this week it is too early to know if that’s a possibility this year. Previously not scheduled to operate for the remainder of the spring schedule, the Little Cloud chairlift began operating today and will continue to do so for the remainder of the spring schedule along with Peruvian Express, Mineral Basin Express and Peruvian Tunnel.
The resort is open for skiing and riding 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Sunday, May 11. Beginning May 16, the hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lift tickets are $59.

Tahoe continues with Spring conditions at Squaw Valley, Mammoth continues as well.

In Idaho, Silver Mountain (in Kellogg) open for May 10...
Looking for more snow? Thanks again to the 1,100 plus skiers & boarders who showed up last Saturday, (5-3) Silver will be open yet again this Saturday, May 10th, for more spectacular spring skiing. With over 455" of total snow this year, they are enjoying fantastic spring conditions with excellent coverage; 143" on Kellogg Peak and 100" at Mid-Mountain.
Reduced Rates: Adult & College $29 - Seniors & Youth $20... Lifts open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. 100% of the terrain will be open, snow tubing park closed, ski school closed, but daycare will be open and of course there will be entertainment.

In the East - ALL RESORTS ARE CLOSED.

GREAT SNOW for OUR 20TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR
from the Editorial page of SKIER NEWS' February-Spring Issue

-
As you may be aware from the editorial in our December-January double issue and on our home page, this is our 20th anniversary of publishing SKIER NEWS.

Recession??? Let's Not Participate!

Recently the mainstream media is focusing on the economy and predicting that a recession just around the corner. For various reasons, many who fill us in on what they think is important in the country want us to believe that on the economic front everyone is doing badly. There are a wide variety of premises, the housing slump, the credit crunch and the weakening dollar all can be drawn into a persuasive argument that the economy is in a downturn. Surely some families are less fortunate than others are, and while many work to help boost everyone’s condition, not everyone can be helped. Nightly news reporters and even economists have political agendas from which they view the world and skew their presentations. Always be skeptical.

Certainly higher fuel costs are contributing to rising costs, especially if you are few tankfuls from your favorite ski resort. But fuel costs always have risen. If there is a law of supply and demand, why are we not increasing the supply? Oil is the fuel of the engine of our freemarket capitalist system. Some day it will be replaced by an alternative. But not today or tomorrow, so we must first increase the supply from domestic sources. It seems as if one political party wants to have a scare-tactic issue more than working to actually solve any real problem by increasing our domestic supply in an environmentally friendly way.

Please just remember this, no economic downturn was ever fixed by Congress taxing and redistributing the wealth. Tax breaks and tax cuts stimulate the economy and put people to work. Those who claim that they are the real agents of “change” will tax you more and leave you with only “change” in your pockets.

As for any recession, the answer is simple, don’t participate. If we all do our part, any thought of a recession will be political rhetoric more than reality for most of us.

Please continue to travel and enjoy the freedom of skiing and thank our heroes in the U.S. Military and our courageous first-responders for helping to preserve our outstanding way of life.

And as always, think snow.
